Ongoing part-time role
An exciting opportunity exists for an enthusiastic Public Health Physician tojoin the Western Public Health Unit (WPHU) in a leadership role for communicable disease control / health protection, in an ongoing, part-time position (0.65 FTE) based at Western Health. This is a chance to join a dynamic team that addresses health inequalities and applies an integrated approach to Public Health, working across health protection and health promotion to serve the community of the Western region of metropolitan Melbourne.

About the role 

The Unit has been established to strengthen the Public Health response to communicable diseases, other health protection challenges and broader Public Health issues. The Unit sits within the Operations Directorate of Western Health and is part of a system of three metropolitan Public Health Units and six regional Public Health Units providing a state-wide system of Public Health delivery and oversight. WPHU is responsible for local communicable disease control and other health protection issues, and wider Public Health policy including for health promotion / population health. Reporting to the Director WPHU, the Public Health Physician will lead a portfolio across communicable disease control, and will undertake risk assessment, risk management and risk communication activities, and apply strategic and medical leadership in the area of health protection and other Public Health topics.

Duties

This leadership opportunity will involve:

  • Health protection leadership for a full scope of communicable disease control functions
  • Strategic and project-based Public Health delivery, bringing wider Public Health expertise to address Public Health challenges and take action on health inequalities within the catchment
  • Participating in a duty and oncall roster for reactive health protection
  • Engaging in a strong learning environment, including providing education and teaching for other staff in the Unit

Skills & Experience OR Essential Criteria 

To be successful in the role you will have:

  • Registration as a medical practitioner in Australia with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency
  • Current Fellowship of the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine or equivalent Public Health experience
  • Experience in communicable disease management, including outbreak response and incident management
  • A strong commitment to improving the health of populations and apply health equity principles to impact marginalised communities
  • An ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team, showing initiative, strong communication and a passion for sharing skills and expertise
