The Carbon Steel Materials Group within CSIRO Mineral Resources conducts research and consulting services across the iron ore and metallurgical coke value chain. The group works closely with industry creating impacts that include growing Australia’s resource base, increasing productivity and reducing environmental footprint in the carbon steel value chain. The group operates pilot and laboratory experiments across areas including sintering & pelletising, Geometallurgy, high temperature chemistry and Coke Making and testing.

 

As a Research Technician, you will be involved in operating and maintaining unique pilot plant equipment as well as conducting pilot scale experiments aimed at supporting the placement of Australian Metallurgical coals in the international export market.

 

This is a full time Monday to Friday position based at our Pullenvale site, QLD.

Your duties will include:

  • Scientific and technical input into Coke Making and contributing to the development of coke/Coke Making capabilities and expertise within the Carbon Steel Materials program.
  • Participating in laboratory and pilot scale experimental work in the area of Coke Making.
  • Collecting and processing experimental data on an ongoing basis to a high degree of accuracy.
  • Preparing data and reports for internal and external customers.
  • Maintaining and upgrading laboratory and pilot scale equipment.
  • Developing and maintaining expertise in the area of Coke Making relevant to Carbon Steel Materials research activities.
  • Other duties as directed.

 

Location:  Pullenvale, QLD

Salary:  $70k to $90k pa + up to 15.4% super

Tenure:  Specified term of 24 months

To be considered you will need:

Essential:

  • A relevant trade certificate, diploma or bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant work experience in metallurgy, pyrometallurgy, mineral processing, science, chemical engineering and/or prior employment with a commercial laboratory.
  • Demonstrated hands-on ability to conduct laboratory and pilot scale experiments, to prepare feed materials, to collect and analyse test data, and to interpret and report results to supervisors.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct analytical test work to a high degree of accuracy in strict adherence to established procedures.
  • Ability to apply your prior knowledge to the area of coke-making. Experience in maintaining laboratory and pilot-scale equipment and diagnosing faults.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work in a team environment, utilise resources effectively, meet deadlines, and adapt to a dynamic work environment while maintaining work quality and performance.
  • Well-developed oral and written communication skills demonstrated by an ability to comprehend and convey detailed instructions/procedures. Intermediate to advanced computing skills.

 

Desirable:

 

  • Work experience in the minerals industry, particularly carbon steel materials.
  • Knowledge or research experience in Coke Making.
  • Experience with the instrumentation, analytical techniques, methods and equipment associated with Coke Making at laboratory and pilot scale.
  • Current National Forklift Ticket.
  • Current Manual Drivers Licence.

Eligibility
