About the role
As one of the world’s largest industrial users of energy, Rio Tinto has a unique challenge in the energy transition. Rio Tinto Energy & Climate (RTEC) is a new global team focused on prioritising and accelerating our decarbonisation efforts to deliver on our climate commitments while ensuring our business is well positioned for the future low-carbon economy. Led by the Chief Decarbonisation Officer, the Energy & Climate team works collaboratively across the business to drive delivery of the Group climate strategy and address our key sources of carbon emissions.
The Senior Commercial Manager role will sit within RTEC Pacific Renewable Energy. The team covers RT assets in Tasmania, Queensland, New South Wales and New Zealand which represents nearly 50% of RT Group carbon emissions. The team is focused on developing new energy solutions to be delivered in these four locations, reducing scope 1 and 2 footprint, enabling future growth and protecting the cost position of existing assets. The energy solutions will be delivered in partnership and require a deep understanding of and relationships within the renewable energy industry and fit for purpose commercial agreements.
Given our continued momentum from the initial 2.2GW of renewable energy projects, we are now looking for a Senior Commercial Manager to develop and execute on long term partnerships across transmission, wind, solar and storage projects. The role will also play a key role in supporting our development partners to bring their projects to full commercial operations. The role will require coordination and management of our key stakeholder relationships including government and transmission network service providers, renewable project developers, supply chain partners and the relevant external advisors.
Reporting to the General Manager, Pacific Renewable Energy, you will:
  • Lead origination, partnership development and broad structuring engagements with market participants for new energy and related services contracts, including leading commercial engagements where relevant
  • Working with the broader Pacific Renewable Energy team, oversee and manage the internal and external approvals process for new energy contracts including the management of all advisors and partners
  • Engage with external development partners on their progress to project delivery and provide support as needed to ensure the projects meet their commercial and operational milestones
  • Assess relevant financial modelling, market analysis, deal structuring and development partner economics to ensure that the PPAs that Rio Tinto enters into are high quality and balance the needs to all partners
  • Ensure full health, safety and environmental compliance with Rio Tinto and statutory requirements.
This position can offer a number of flexible work arrangement options including flexible hours, part time, or job share arrangements.
What you'll bring
  • Experience leading deal structuring, financing, value optimisation, investment approaches and valuation methodologies
  • Experience developing or contracting renewable energy projects connected to the NEM
  • Experience leading negotiations of commercial contracts and associated processes.
  • Experience with providing advice and recommendations to senior leaders and executives on strategic decisions and investments
  • Qualifications in a relevant commercial discipline, drawn from law, commercial, economics, business or finance and/or other relevant disciplines
  • Demonstrated communication skills, including ability to build relationships and excellent writing skills
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently as part of a small and dynamic team
