The opportunity

Your new role

Data services team manages the design and build of all data products on the AUSPAC division's integrated data analytics platform called DAP. This platform has been built over several years on SQL server technology and is now being modernised to cloud technologies (Azure, Databricks). Data services team is responsible for migration of DAP platform data products to cloud, along with designing and extending the integrated data foundation by bringing in multiple data sources onto the new cloud platform. This data foundation and respective data products are aimed to serve various analytics, BI and machine learning use cases across QBE's all lines of businesses, enterprise functions and key value chains in Claims and Underwriting.

As team embarks on multiple projects to deliver future ready data foundation, we have multiple exciting opportunities for Senior Data Services Specialists to join our Data services team. In this role, you would work with a highly skilled team of data designers, business analysts and delivery managers to design and deliver best in class data architecture, and data products on new age cloud technologies.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Provide inputs into Strategy and Planning for ongoing development of data foundation.
  • Leading team of data specialists, and data analysts to deliver workstreams under Data Services projects.
  • Responsible for the validating data, setting up standards and guidelines for code, analysis of data, identification, sourcing, cleansing and manipulation of data across the operational systems and the data and analytics platform. The Data Specialist works with the business, Analytics partners, Information Analysts and Data Scientists to understand data requirements and execute the sourcing and integration of this data to serve the needs of data and analytics work.
  • Setup code standards and guidelines for Data specialists.
  • Expand and grow data platform capabilities to solve new data problems and challenges by identifying, sourcing and integrating new data
  • Design and development of data engineering assets and scalable feature engineering frameworks to support various Business Unit's data demands and internal data science activities.
  • Evaluate feature importance and manage production of data features.
  • Code, test, and document new or modified data models and ETL tools to create robust and scalable data assets for reporting and analytics.
  • Deploying data assets to production and providing L3 support on assets in production.
  • Expand and increase data platform capabilities to resolve new data problems and challenges by identifying, sourcing, and integrating new data.
  • Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements: automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.
  • Peer review code and promote dev ops culture within Data Services team.
  • Implement solutions that adhere to architecture best practices.
  • Contribute to our ambition to develop a best practice Data and Analytics platform, leveraging next generation technologies.
  • Define and build the data pipelines that will enable faster, better, data-informed decision-making within the business.
  • Build ADF framework to support Data Migration to Azure Cloud technologies and deliver new projects as per new target architecture within Azure data cloud service.
  • Develop ETL solutions on Python, Databricks, Spark, Microsoft Azure Technology Stack to load data across multiple sources into the Data and Analytics platform.

About you

You will have proven experience in data engineering, solution designs and delivery. Advanced communication skills, able to articulate, present, influence and negotiate with key stakeholders. Knowledge and understanding of end-to-end data engineering lifecycle and data quality management. A flair for learning new data tools and best practices.

  • Cloud data analytics technologies: Databricks, Azure ADF
  • Solid experience using: MS Stack: Microsoft SQL Server, SSIS, SSRS, SSAS, Power BI and SQL.
  • Experience working MongoDB, Graph databases, programming languages (R, Python, Spark ETL SQL VStudio), CI/tools (Bamboo, or similar), GitHub, Jira and Confluence
  • Demonstrated experience in leading a team/teams of data experts
  • Passionate in learning about new data tools and best practice
  • Experience in working in Agile teams, able to lead a team and working independently
  • Strong working knowledge of the end-to-end data management lifecycle and data quality management
