The Health, Safety & Wellbeing Team (HSW) are responsible for driving the health and safety programs to ensure a proactive and engaging HSW culture across Garvan. The HSW Team put people at the heart of health and safety to enable Garvan to do great science, safely. Partnering with all levels of management and staff, The HSW Team lead, coordinate and advise on all work health and safety matters to protect from harm and provide meaningful direction.

In this exciting part time opportunity, you will be working with all levels of management and staff to implement the health & safety management system (HSMS) throughout Garvan! This role will be a leading participant in the continuous improvement of the health & safety culture program working collaboratively with the broader HSW team and key stakeholders.
The Senior Health, Safety & Wellbeing Specialist will assist Garvan to meet legislative requirements relating to WHS to achieve best practice across the Institute.
The HSW Team is the HSMS custodian, promoting its functionality, and creating a great user experience by providing support to internal and external stakeholders.
Salary: Full time equivalent salary from $100k + 10.5% super + salary packaging
Employment Type: 10-month fixed term contract part time (20-30 hours per week)

WHAT YOU WILL DO
The key responsibilities include:
Positively influence, and advise people leaders and staff on health and safety matters, requirements under WHS legislation, and drive forward the agenda for positive health and safety culture in the workplace;
Lead the development, implementation and day to day management of the Health & Safety Management System (HSMS) at all Garvan work sites, including the review/development of policies and processes;
Support & play a lead role in research risk management activities including training and coordination of Group Risk Managers and the risk management database;
Implementing Health, Safety & Wellbeing strategies, training and programs to support health & safety, compliance and effective application in the workplace;
Conduct health and safety and biosafety inspections and audits;
Conduct health and safety investigations and provide robust analysis of root causes and corrective actions;
Monitor changes to WHS legislation and standards and notify relevant parties regarding changes;
Provide guidance, advise and support on health, safety, compliance queries including import and export of scientific commodities
Partner with stakeholders (including People Leaders & Group Risk Managers) to actively assess and deliver safety outcomes;
Contribute as an effective team member to enable identified strategies, plans and customer services to be achieved;
Assist with Injury and Claim Management as required.
ABOUT YOU
Demonstrated success and previous experience in a WHS role;
Previous experience within a laboratory, science or research organisation is highly desirable;
Previous experience managing workplace injuries as a Return to Work Coordinator is highly desirable;
Proven experience in assisting with developing, implementing and monitoring of a WHS Management System, and the supporting plans, policies, procedures and guidelines
Good knowledge and demonstrated experience in WHS principles
Good knowledge of current WHS legislation
Ability to confidently work with scientific staff in documenting their procedures
Strong customer service ethic and approach
Excellent written and oral communications
Demonstrated ability to work with limited supervision
Competent in the use of key desktop applications (MSWord, Excel, PowerPoint).
RTW Coordinator Certificate (desirable)
