Job description

The Senior Ranger is accountable and responsible for coordinating and assisting in the delivery of the functions of the Ranger team within the Park Services section. The Senior Ranger has primary responsibility for building, supporting and supervising a small team in delivering regulatory compliance (education and enforcement) and visitor and wildlife incident response. The Senior Ranger facilitates support for park infrastructure construction and maintenance works, visitor risk management, nature conservation activities, wildlife management and heritage works within the EHP division.
The successful applicant will be expected to reside on Rottnest Island for an initial period of up to 5 years. Residency is not a requirement or condition of employment and is at RIA's absolute discretion.
Selection Criteria
Applicants should address the following essential criteria. These should be addressed in no more than three (3) pages in total. Desirable criteria will be assessed as required.
Essential * Highly developed interpersonal skills, with proven community liaison, negotiation and conflict resolution skills in conjunction with a strong customer focus and the ability to negotiate positive outcomes.

  • Considerable experience and knowledge of implementing operational and project plans and works programs associated with visitor services and natural resource management.
  • Demonstrated experience of leadership, supervisory, team management, works program planning and human resource management skills.
  • Considerable experience in conducting statutory compliance activities including education and enforcement.
The following essential criteria will be assessed at some stage during the selection process. * Demonstrated proficiency in written communication and computer operation skills, including word processing, spreadsheets and database software.
  • Current Unrestricted coxswains certificate or the ability to obtain within three months of appointment.
  • A current “C” Class Drivers Licence.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Work, Health and Safety and Equal Opportunity Employment.
  • Knowledge of Incident Control System and its application to emergencies such as oil spills, wildfires and marine mammal strandings.
Desirable * Ongoing willingness and ability to participate in fire management activities that contribute to bushfire suppression and prescribed burning operations commensurate with capability, capacity, training and level of experience.
  • Certificate in National Park Management, Certificate in Conservation and Land Management or an equivalent qualification with a preference for a further tertiary qualification in natural resource management.

Flexibility Requirement
  • When not residing on island, must be capable of commuting to and from the Island on a regular basis and reside overnight on the island as rostered/required.
  • Must be capable and willing to work rostered working arrangements including weekend and public holidays. Work hours will be posted on a fortnightly roster in advance.
  • Must be capable and willing to carry an on-call phone if require and respond to afterhours call outs in a timely manner. An on-call roster will be prepared in advance.
Note: The successful applicant will be required to possess or obtain a current (issue date not older than 6 months) and satisfactory National Police Check prior to commencement.

The successful applicant will be required to possess or obtain a current Working With Children Check card prior to commencement.
