As a Senior Technical Officer, you will:
- Provide general knowledge of biology, anatomy, physiology, and dissection to manage and support the teaching and research facilities within the school.
- Utilise a broad technical understanding in laboratories to plan and oversee projects/activities to deliver sustainable outcomes and value within constraints of time, cost, and quality.
- Strive for excellence and consult regularly with staff/students/stakeholders to clarify who requires the information, the purpose for which it is required, criteria for success and where and when advice and recommendation is required.
- Provide ethical advice to staff/students/stakeholders that address underlying issues, promoting value-adding insights and recommendations.
- Challenge existing processes by formulating creative and inclusive alternative solutions and benefits.
- Plan and prioritise work and critical activities appropriately and recognise barriers to achieving outcomes, finds effective ways to deal with them and evaluate progress.
In a typical week, you will:
- Provide day-to-day management of biological laboratories and teaching spaces, including workflow organisation of practical class support.
- Ensure that laboratory equipment is maintained and operated to a safe and high standard, carry out minor repairs to equipment and coordinate with stakeholders within Deakin or outside service engineers as necessary including calibration and maintenance of a wide range of laboratory equipment.
- Ensure appropriate levels of laboratory stocks, equipment or materials are available to conduct teaching and research activities within the School, using relevant purchasing policies and processes
- Provide technical expertise and training to academics, technical staff, postgraduate and undergraduate students in the preparation of materials and operation of equipment for practical classes and the undertaking of research experiments
To be successful, you’ll have:
- A Degree in Biology/Science (or related field) with subsequent relevant experience; or
- Extensive experience and specialist knowledge (including dissection skills) or broad knowledge in technical or administrative fields or, an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
- Experience working collaboratively and effectively with multiple internal and external stakeholders clients and/or students
- Experience working in a laboratory environment, including operation of instrumentation, equipment repair and use, and laboratory safety
