• Qualification
Reporting to the Work Health and Safety (WHS) Manager, the Senior Work Health and Safety (WHS) Officer supports the Mint’s work, Health and Safety program. The Mint’s workplace has a range of unique, complex and high-risk Health and Safety matters such as hazardous chemicals, hazardous materials, public safety, plant and equipment, and construction and infrastructure.
The Senior WHS Officer provides advice to managers and employees, promoting safe work practices across the Mint. They engage with internal and external stakeholders including regulators, inspectors, auditors, and other authorities. The Senior WHS Officer exercises financial delegation for expenses including safety training costs and consumables, in accordance with Commonwealth Procurement Rules. They also support procurement activities.
The Senior WHS Officer supervises a small team, providing mentorship, training and guidance. They also support building capability within the MSQ team.
The duties of this position include:
1. Developing and reviewing WHS policies and procedures, and providing technical advice on safety to managers and employees.
2. Assisting in the development of safe systems of work and assessment, and the control of risks.
3. Supporting the WHS Manager deliver the WHS team’s forward work plan.
4. Supporting the Mint’s Health and Safety Committee, Health and Safety Representatives and First Aid Officers.
5. Performing investigations and audits of the Mint’s safety management system, ensuring compliance with the Work Health Safety Act 2011 (Cth), Work Health Safety Regulations 2011 (Cth), relevant codes of practice, and ISO45001:2018.
6. Performing safety management system tasks including incident reporting, corrective actions and workplace inspections.
7. Supporting the delivery of work programmes including psychosocial risk assessments, health surveillance monitoring, workplace condition monitoring (such as silica dust, noise, and chemical use), external audits and inspections.
8. Developing reports for compliance, management reporting and authorities.
9. Supervising a small team, providing mentorship, training, guidance and performance feedback.
10. Supporting the MSQ branch as required, including supporting procurement and undertaking cross-functional tasks.
Security clearance
This position requires a Baseline security clearance. The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
Qualification
A relevant qualification (minimum Cert IV, or higher).
