Your opportunity

As our Shipping Support OfficerMarine Operations (SSO-MO), you will meticulously prepare, manage, and adjust the roster for Marine Operations and VTS staff and be the primary contact for team members, offering expert guidance for roster-related inquiries, leave requests and absences.

This role is based in Sydney (Millers Point) and reports to the Manager, Marine Operations, Sydney. You may be required to work from Port Botany as required.

This role will work closely and collaborate with the Shipping Support Officer – Pilotage and Port Services (SSO-PPS) and where required undertake role responsibilities of the SSO-PPS during leave, absences or as directed by Manager Marine Operations

Here’s how your impact will truly count:

  • You’ll utilise the Emp Live rostering system to create, manage, and adjust rosters for our 24/7 Marine Operations and VTS teams.
  • You’ll ensure the equitable allocation of resources and staff scheduling while maintaining logistical efficiency.
  • You’ll analyse data and produce detailed reports for management, drawing conclusions, highlighting opportunities for improvement, including data on casual utilisation and leave trends to support Marine Operations.
  • You’ll effectively respond to staff absences, re-rostering, emergency replacements or backfilling requirements.
  • You’ll ensure seamless payroll coordination and data interface with the payroll team.
  • You’ll manage staff training and development needs and identification of training opportunities within the roster.
  • You’ll run the annual leave ballot process and monitor qualification records, notifying staff of expirations and coordinating training plans.
  • You’ll analyse data and produce detailed reports drawing conclusions, highlighting opportunities for improvement, including data on casual utilization and leave trends to support the Marine Operations team.
  • You’ll collaborate with effectively with stakeholders and keep the Roster Guidelines up to date based on advice from Marine Operations Management.

What you’ll bring

  • Willingness to learn and maintain a high-level proficiency with the functions of the Shipping Support Officer – Pilotage and Port Services
  • Strong communication and customer service skills to effectively collaborate with stakeholders.
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Excel and proficient in using Microsoft suite of products including POWER BI.
  • Meticulous attention to detail, efficient multitasking, and prioritisation of tasks.
  • Previous rostering experience in a complex 24/7 operational environment.
  • Previous experience with the Emp Live rostering system or a similar tool.
  • Experience in a port operational environment or similar would be desirable.
