Select Carbon is Shell's first acquisition globally for its Nature-Based Solutions business, which invests in forests, grasslands, wetlands and other natural ecosystems, and in agricultural land use around the world to reduce emissions and capture CO2 while benefiting biodiversity, land productivity and local communities.
With a proven track record partnering with landholders, Select Carbon has scoped, co-designed, monitored and reported on carbon sequestration projects that are currently participating in the Australian Government's ACCU Scheme, the Emissions Reduction Fund and other carbon offset markets.
Select Carbon is committed to increasing carbon sequestration in vegetation and soil to reduce Australia's net carbon emissions whilst providing opportunities for farmers to improve their farm business.
What's the role?
As a Project Manager - Soil Carbon, you will proactively manage projects and stakeholders (including farmers and the Clean Energy Regulator), to guide the direction and monitor performance of Soil Carbon Projects, ensuring projects meet or exceed the minimum requirements for compliance.
A key aspect of this role will be engaging with the agricultural industry, including farmers, advisors and other agribusiness, to evaluate and realise the potential for a Soil Carbon Project on farms. Your understanding of farming systems and continual-improvement approach will improve project outcomes, reduce risks and contribute to our growing Soil Carbon portfolio.
You will thrive in discussing business development opportunities with farmers, their advisors and Select Carbon colleagues to actively contribute to a growing portfolio of well-conceived and well-managed Soil Carbon Projects.
You will also be working within a compliance framework to ensure projects meet or exceed regulatory requirements and broader expectations in the agricultural and carbon farming sectors.
The Project Manager - Soil Carbon will provide support at different levels in the business to build strong and effective relationships internally and with strategic partners.
Travel to rural areas during project design, initiation and ongoing monitoring phase will be required to ensure that project information is gathered and shared in a timely fashion with farmers, and that project activities are implemented in accordance with the Land Management Strategy.
Moreover, you will:
- Apply complex scientific knowledge, alongside colleagues with specific expertise, to deliver practical field-based solutions which maximise Soil Carbon sequestration and de-risk projects.
- Build your network in the agricultural industry to grow the Soil Carbon Program, including creating opportunities where potential projects can be identified or where knowledge sharing can showcase the integrity of Select Carbon's Soil Carbon Projects.
- Be willing to complete business development actions in a timely manner so that projects move through the development pipeline efficiently.
- Be proactive in identifying opportunities to improve project support, as the farmer liaison, or improve any other aspect of Select Carbon's services and procedures.
- Assist Select Carbon in making sure all projects comply with the appropriate Method and the Australian Carbon Industry Code of Conduct.
- Assist in preparing all project audit files in conjunction with other Select Carbon staff to ensure timely completion of audits and delivery of ACCUs.
- Maintain appropriate company records/database of regular contact with all project proponents and records of dealing with any issues/concerns to be used in later audits as evidence.
- Support the Soil Carbon Program Manager and staff with continuous improvement for project development and management processes.
- Uphold Select Carbon's strong values on HSSE and environmental awareness.
What we need from you
We are keen to hear from qualified professionals with proven business development or project management experience within the agriculture or carbon sectors with a soils focus.
Further desired requirements are as follows:
- Tertiary Qualifications in Agricultural Science, Agronomy, Soil or similar fields of earth sciences.
- Experience with, or knowledge of, the ACCU Scheme and Carbon Farming in Australia including reporting, compliance and carbon accounting (highly desirable), project development under the Soil Carbon Method.
- High attention to detail and strong organisational and project management skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills and customer relationship, both face to face and remotely.
- Ability to work independently in rural areas, in addition to working in a remotely managed team.
- Practical experience in a commercial farming business or private agricultural service industry (highly desirable).
- Relevant experience in farming systems with a specialisation in soils and pasture/crop agronomy.
- A good understanding of farm management strategies to optimise carbon sequestration in agricultural soil.
- Experience in building networks and trust using an evidence-based and production-focused approach.
- The capacity to apply scientific and technical knowledge for practical outcomes on grazing and cropping properties.
Application period will run until March 8, 2024.
