About the Role


The Specialist Project Engineer (PE) manages all engineering related works (technical, cost & schedule) performed by tier 1 external engineering consultants, for a project (or works with a lead/principal PE on a large project).

The role is NOT as a package engineer or as a site based construction support engineer. Candidates need to demonstrate some design management experience, managing design done by external consultants with a strong focus on budget and schedule management.


How BHP does Projects
 

Projects are of a materials handling nature across BHPs mines and port – ore crushing, conveying & screening, train load-outs, balance machines (stackers & reclaimers), car dumpers and ship loaders. Engineering experience in mining & materials handling is preferred.


The Specialist PE is a core member of cross-functional project team (Perth based) for each project, working closely with the Study Lead/Specialist throughout all study phases (IPS, SPS, DPS & EXE). Project Engineers will support the project’s delivery (Execution – EXE phase) and handover phases where occasional site travel (Pilbara Region) and short term assignments to the project site. Technical expertise and support is provided by internal BHP subject matter experts (SMEs) and the external engineering consultants.


Role objectives are:
 

  • Achieving engineering schedule, budget and quality requirements.
  • Optimise the design to maximise value and enable safe and efficient construction, commissioning, operation and maintenance.
  • Ensure design meets statutory, Australian and BHP engineering standards.
  • Follow BHP engineering & project processes and procedures.

Core Accountabilities:
 

  • Plan the engineering work
    • Leads and develops Engineering Management Strategy (EMS) and Engineering Management Plan (EMP) for the project.
  • Frame the engineering work
    • Development of project User Requirements (UR), gathering input from site Operations and other relevant stakeholders
    • Development of Basis of Design (BoD) and engineering Scope of Work (SoW).
  • Support Tender evaluation and award.
  • Manages performance of external engineering consultants (i.e. ESPs) in accordance with BHP processes:
  • Collaborates with Delivery, Operational Readiness and Commissioning teams to ensure that engineering is developed to support construction, commissioning and operating methodologies, strategies and systems.


Support Operational Readiness by providing engineering related data in order to enable the effective transition to Operations.
