Job description

Job summary

Are you prepared to make a substantial impact on the lives of Indigenous students from regional and remote Australia? Yalari invites you to become a part of our journey, where education serves as a catalyst for change. We're offering more than just a job; we're presenting an opportunity to be a driver of transformation. Yalari is more than an educational scholarship program; it's a path towards empowerment. We're in search of a committed Student Support Officer to join us in Orange to support young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at our partner boarding school based in Orange.

About Us

For nearly two decades, Yalari has been changing the lives of Indigenous children from remote and regional communities, by providing scholarships to Australia’s leading boarding schools.

In 2023, we proudly supported 230 students on their boarding school journey at 20 partner schools, alongside over 500 accomplished alumni who've made their mark across the nation.

The Role

As a Student Support Officer, your role is more than just a title; you'll be a guide, mentor, and confidant. You'll work tirelessly to support our students, instilling in them Yalari's core values of Compassion, Openness, Respect Resilience, Inclusiveness and Excellence.

Your role is based afterschool, evenings and weekends where you'll provide emotional and cultural support to nurture independent thinkers and future leaders. The relationships you build are the cornerstone of our Student Support network. You will work closely with partner school staff, parents and guardians, our Head Office Team, and our scholarship students.

In addition, you will play a crucial role in connecting students to their future role as alumni. By nurturing a sense of belonging and purpose, you'll inspire them to envision their place in the Yalari community beyond their school years.

Administrative tasks, case management, student sponsor updates and insightful reporting will all be part of your responsibilities, connecting you to our mission.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is someone who can quickly build rapport with various stakeholders including young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, their parents, and staff at our Partner Schools. You will have demonstrated experience working effectively with young people and dealing with challenging situations and circumstances. We are looking for someone who can communicate broadly, work remotely while staying connected to the rest of the team, and organise workflow efficiently. You will need computer literacy including the ability to use Microsoft Sharepoint and other online database tools.

A ‘can do’ attitude, sense of humour and ability to problem-solve are essential.

This role comes with a degree of flexibility to benefit both staff members and students. The ideal candidate is someone who is highly organised and can be flexible enough to meet immediate needs as they arise.

Additional Requirements of the position:

1. Availability to work outside of business hours. Most of your contracted hours will be afterschool, evenings, and weekends.

2. Availability to travel at least four times each year to Yalari Head Office (Gold Coast) to attend paid training, development and team building sessions.

3. Full availability of contracted hours in the first and last week of all school terms and for the Yalari Orientation Camp held on the Gold Coast (one week) in mid-January each year.

4. Hold, or have the ability to hold a current Working with Children Card and National Police check.

5. Have a non-restricted driver’s license with a good driving record and use of your own vehicle with full comprehensive insurance.

6. Capacity to establish a home office with travel to partner school(s) as a routine part of the position. The vast majority of contracted hours require face to face interaction with students at their boarding school(s).

How to apply

Please submit your resume and a one-page cover letter. The cover letter should be tailored to address your suitability as the ‘ideal candidate’. Tell us a little about yourself and why you are interested in this position. Applications will need to follow this process to be considered.

You will have full rights to work in Australia. Appointment to this position is subject to passing a mandatory Working with Children Check and a National Police Check.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are encouraged to apply.

Applications will be closed as soon as suitable candidates are identified.
