Systems Engineer – Training: Defence

Calytrix Technologies is an Australian company specialising in Training Systems Integration for the Australian and international defence community. As a dedicated Australian Defence training and simulation company, Calytrix maintains offices in Perth, Canberra, the UK and USA. We focus on enhancing joint and collective training through the integration of innovative exercise planning and simulation systems. Our simulation services include the integration of tactical 3D environments, constructive simulations, Virtual Reality simulations, simulators and the development of simulation frameworks and military training support.

Calytrix is seeking a Training Systems Engineer (TSE) who will be responsible for the architectural design and integration of simulation systems for a major Defence project.

Working as part of a blended (Prime, Calytrix and Defence), the position will work collaboratively with Calytrix’s Training Support Team and the Prime’s engineering team to design and develop a comprehensive suite of simulation systems to facilitate the introduction into service and continuation training for a new and major Defence maritime capability.

The TSE will work with a team of maritime subject matter experts, training designers and simulation engineers to deliver innovative training equipment and simulation solutions to a Defence customer introducing a new maritime capability. 

Responsibilities

Based in Perth, WA the Training Systems Engineer will provide leadership and guidance in developing and delivering the technical equipment to support the training systems required of a new maritime capability for Defence. The position will be responsible for:

  • Setting the technical direction, defining and prioritising the development of the technical equipment and simulators for the project. 
  • Designing and implementing the simulation architecture.
  • Providing relevant technical and domain knowledge through mentoring of the broader technical and software/hardware development teams.
  • Plan and implement test plans for functional test and reliability.
  • Provide relationship management and technical program guidance to external design partners and suppliers.
  • Generate design documents for regulatory submissions.
  • Contribute to development program project schedules and budgets.
  • Ensure engineering standards of quality, cost, safety, timeliness, and performance are observed.

Requirements

The TSE will be able to demonstrate:

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline from a recognised institution and/or equivalent relevant experience (preferably within the defence industry).
  • Advanced knowledge of appropriate engineering development methodologies and strategies.
  • Experience in authoring the ‘Systems Engineering document set’ required on a major defence platform.
  • Significant industry experience in technical leadership and development of engineering acquisition solutions.
  • Experience in systems requirements analysis and development.
  • Experience with the development, execution, and reporting of Test Plans and Acceptance Test Procedures. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to prepare and present concise reports, briefings, and updates.
  • Hold an Australian Defence clearance or has the ability to gain a clearance, which includes the requirement to hold Australian citizenship. 

The TSE may also be able to demonstrate some of the following desirable traits:

  • Systems Engineering qualifications or association memberships desirable.
  • Experience in software engineering and software design.
  • Experience with simulation integration standards (DIS/HLA).
  • Experience with common data protocols used in maritime systems (NMEA 0183/2000, etc.)
  • Experience in roles require the integration of hardware and software systems.
  • Understanding of the principles of network design.
  • Experience working on the delivery of defence training simulation systems.

The ideal candidate will be someone who understands the practical technology implications of high-level system architectural decisions. They will be able to work with military subject matter experts to document system design and develop detailed requirements for the sub-systems that will combine to form new training systems.

This position is offered as a full time role with an initial engagement anticipated at three years. The program represents the first phase of a longer term series of Defence procurements for the OEM with the potential for a much longer term engagement. 

The position is based in the Perth CBD with routine travel to the Henderson Precinct. Some inter-state travel is anticipated.
