Job description

The Role of the Learning Support Teacher Aide:

As a Teacher Aide, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the delivery of high-quality education by assisting teachers with preparing and enhancing learning materials and activities. You will provide warm and effective support to both students and teachers. It is expected that all Teacher Aides align with the College's Vision, Mission, and Values, as well as uphold its Christian ethos, Academic Excellence, and Personal Integrity.

This includes setting a positive example, fostering positive interactions with colleagues, students, families, and the broader community, and demonstrating a commitment to learning in the classroom. The Learning Support Teacher Aide is to enhance learning outcomes by working directly with individual students and small groups of students in the areas of literacy (oral reading, comprehension, spelling, writing etc) and numeracy. Students may have a disability or learning difficulty and an understanding of these conditions should inform the delivery of subject matter. Assistance with administration duties is also required.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Must be willing to support the Christian ethos of Gold Coast Christian College in the context of the employee’s professional responsibilities.
  • Have completed a Certificate III or IV Teacher Aide course or higher qualification.
  • A minimum of a Senior First Aide Certificate.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to work positively with children of all ages.
  • Previous experience in an education institution or similar industry.
  • Hold or be eligible to hold a Positive Notice Blue Card for Child Related Employment with Queensland Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian.
  • Be an Australian Citizen.

Core Competencies:

  • A basic understanding of the administration/financial structure of the Adventist School system and its operations and how it aligns with the mission of the Church.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and electronic communication skills.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills, with an ability to prioritise tasks and work well under pressure.
  • Use IT at a high level to achieve tasks. Demonstrated knowledge of computer literacy skills. 

Specific Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities would include, but not be limited to:

Teacher Aide Duties

  • Assist with working with individual students to support their specific areas of need in both individual and integration environments with the aim to increase learning opportunities.
  • Assist with providing students with the opportunity to develop personal, social and independent learning skills.
  • Support students (who may have a disability) on excursions and camps.
  • Maintain discipline, reinforce appropriate behaviours and provide motivation in small group settings so that optimal learning can occur.
  • Provide subject specific strategies to individuals or small groups to enable comprehension of subject matter.
  • Display initiative in communicating with and supporting teachers.
  • Communicate well with students, parents and teachers.
  • Displaying confidentiality, tact, reliability and sensitivity to students and their families.
  • Be adaptable in collaborating with different teachers, adjusting to various teaching styles, and supporting students with diverse learning needs.
  • Use good time management skills when moving to different classes as per the timetable.
  • Participate in meetings about a student and their individual needs.
  • Observe students’ performance and record relevant data to assess progress in all areas where required.
  • Assist with the management and stocktaking of equipment and resources.
  • Assist teaching staff with playground duties, bus supervision per the duty roster.
  • Support the college as required at various sporting events.
  • Display respect and empathy to all students.
  • Establish a supportive relationship with students and use methods of promoting and reinforcing their self-esteem to positively contribute to the welfare, health and safety of students. Including the delivery of first aid.
  • Use different computer software to assist as needed.
  • Assist with the day-to-day operations and any special projects as directed. 

Administration Duties

  • Maintain student records for use in reviewing individual development.
  • Provide clerical assistance including typing, data entry, photocopying, scanning, laminating, filing, marking, and other tasks as directed.

  • Establish and maintain positive and professional relationships within the college and between the college and community.
  • Display ethical behaviour in working with students, parents, guardians and caregivers, college personnel, external agencies and stakeholders.
  • Serve as a role model for students and staff in demonstrating positive attitudes, appropriate attire, personal grooming and a consistently effective work ethic.
  • Contribute to maintaining a positive and effective team and work environment within the college by engaging and communicating with staff to keep them up-to-date and informed.
  • Enthusiastically seek participation in appropriate professional development activities.
  • Comply with health and safety policies, procedures, hazard reporting and safe work practices.
  • Comply with all College policies including Code of Conduct, Workplace Health & Safety, Employment and Child Protection Policies.
