Job description

Are you an experienced, proactive and outcome driven investigator and/or WHS professional and loves taking up challenges and work towards improving health and safety outcomes in Western Australia?

WorkSafe is looking for senior inspectors/investigators to be part of our Regional Team located in the City of Bunbury.

About the role

We are looking for experienced investigators and/or WHS professionals, skilled in conducting highly complex, sensitive and/or high-profile investigations into serious workplace injuries and fatalities involving alleged breaches of the State’s workplace health and safety legislation.

In this role, you will be responsible for conducting the full investigative process, including interpreting and applying relevant legislation and policy; collecting, appraising and compiling evidence for legal proceedings and criminal prosecutions; and producing high quality investigative written material.

You will possess high-level analytical skills with the ability to assess complex information, using best practice and contemporary investigative techniques and standards. You will be responsible for completing efficient and timely investigations, resulting in briefs of evidence for matters prosecuted in the relevant Courts or preparing reports recommending safety outcomes.

You will have highly developed skills in conducting investigative interviews and have excellent evidentiary collection, assessment and presentations skills. You will bring to the role superior communication skills, both verbal and written, as well as the ability to manage a range of stakeholders.

Your track record of delivering results within a team in a changing environment, genuine commitment to deliver high-quality investigative regulatory services, a significant personal integrity and high ethical standards will be pivotal to your success in this role.

It would be advantageous if you have demonstrated practical experience in the application of the Work Health and Safety (WHS) Act 2020 or equivalent relevant legislation, including knowledge of any industry-based workplace health and safety practices.

Where will you work?

This position is in the Regional Team, which is located in the City of Bunbury.  As part of your work, you will be required to travel to incident sites in the Regional Areas as required.

Who will you work with?

The Regional Team within the Investigations Directorate is a small, dynamic and busy team, where no two days are the same. The inspectors/investigators in this team respond to fatal and serious incidents that occur in primary industries and across other industries in all locations in Western Australia.

The Investigations Directorate is a great team of dedicated professionals, who support each other when investigating fatal and serious incident matters. As we deliver our outcomes, we never lose sight of the important work we are doing. We are contributing our knowledge and experience to meet our goals and know that great working relationships will help us get there.

Our Directorate investigates fatal and serious workplace incidents to determine whether duty holders have complied with the Work Health and Safety Act 2020.  We believe every workplace incident and fatality is one too many. We have the integrity, compassion, expertise and courage to deal with the most serious and sensitive workplace incidents.

Exposure to potentially traumatic events

This role is identified as having a higher likelihood of exposure to potentially traumatic events. This is any distressing experience or situation in which an individual’s physical or psychological wellbeing may be threatened. This could involve attending or investigating safety incidents or fatalities, interacting with affected, distressed and/or aggressive people, and exposure to objectionable material such as records containing potentially traumatic content. The department has specific Potentially Traumatic Event Response Support processes and training available for this role.

Significant demonstrated knowledge and experience in the following:

  • Conducting highly complex, sensitive and/or high-profile investigations using recognised investigative methods, skills and associated standards and/or demonstrated practical experience in the application of the Work Health and Safety (WHS) Act 2020 or equivalent relevant legislation.
  • Producing high level investigative written material including compiling summaries and reports and documenting evidentiary assessments and investigative outcomes.
  • Contributing positively to high performing investigative teams, coaching, and guiding less experienced team members.

It would be advantageous to have:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of any industry-based workplace safety practices and issues.
  • A Diploma or higher qualification in OSH/WHS or equivalent relevant industry experience.

All requirements, capabilities and pre-employment checks listed on the attached JDF including National Police Clearance, Pre-Employment Medical Assessment, Psychometric Assessment and Pre- Employment Conflict of Interest Declaration will also form part of the selection process. A Q fever screening test is required and Q fever vaccination may also be a requirement.

The psychometric assessment will be included as a selection method within this process.
