JOB DESCRIPTION
- Lead a critical team responsible for assessing victims of crime financial assistance applications, providing victim recognition statements and co-ordinating victim recognition meetings.

- VPS6 - $130,673 - $174,869 + superannuation
The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking an Assessment Manager to Consider and approve highly complex applications for the new Victims of Crime Financial Assistance scheme.
This is a prioritised role for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples, who will be given priority consideration as per the special measures provision of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010.
About the Business Unit
This is an exciting opportunity to deliver a major new initiative for victims of crime. The FAS is a landmark reform that will replace the judicially based Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal with an administrative scheme that prioritises the needs of victims and supports their recovery from violent crime.
The FAS is highly anticipated by victims and stakeholders and represents a major leap forward in the Victorian Government's response to victims of crime. Established under the Victims of Crime (Financial Assistance Scheme) Act 2022 the FAS will provide financial assistance through a simple and easy to navigate process that is fair, sensitive, and responsive to victims' needs. It will acknowledge harm done and be trauma informed, with a priority focus on being inclusive and culturally safe.
Reporting to the Director (Deputy Decision Maker) Assessment and Recognition you will be responsible for the management of a team that assess financial assistance applications, provide victim recognition statements, and coordinate victim recognition meetings.
About the Role
Duties will include:
- Lead a team of senior assessors, assessors, and recognition support officers, supporting them to deliver quality services and ensuring they meet service targets and functional responsibilities.
- Lead and manage daily operations, including allocation of resources, management of incoming work, communication with staff and stakeholders, completion of reports and auditing outputs.
- Be the point of escalation and provision of advice on applications. Be a leader in setting culture that is inclusive, respectful, and embeds trauma-informed practice and quality improvement.

About you
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Demonstrated experience in management of teams with decision-making functions.
- Demonstrated ability in diplomacy and judgement to provide accurate, clear, and comprehensive decisions within defined time frames.
- In-depth knowledge of the nature and dynamics of family violence and sexual assault and the systemic barriers faced by marginalised communities in the justice system.
Qualifications:
- A relevant tertiary qualification and/or experience in community services, social work, criminology, psychology, victim services and/or family violence is essential.
