ASSISTANT ACCOUNTANT
Since 1974, Althea Projects Inc. has been supporting and strengthening the capacity of vulnerable people within Townsville and the surrounding regions. As an NGO, our main programs are Foster & Kinship, Wee Care Residential, Althea House and Althea’s Community Hub, from which we deliver a range of community-based services.
We are excited to be recruiting for the newly established role of Assistant Accountant on a full-time permanent basis, based on site at our Townsville Corporate Office. The Assistant Accountant will support the Corporate Services Manager by providing management accounting support and advice to the organisation.
The role will be directly responsible for:
- Month-end financial closing, including preparation of accruals, prepayments, balance sheet account reconciliations and assisting with analysis of results.
- Preparation of monthly profit and loss, balance sheet and cashflow statements.
- Assisting in the preparation of annual organisation budgets and grant and funding applications.
- Filling in for the Corporate Services Manager as needed, from time to time.
- Assisting with financial analysis, and scenario forecasting of program income and expenditure.
- Preparation and lodgement of ATO reporting, including IAS and BAS and liaison with ATO as required.
- Preparation of annual FBT return.
- Reviewing and maintaining accuracy in program income and expenditure allocation.
- Preparation of fortnightly departmental billing data.
- Preparation of acquittal financial data.
- Assisting with preparation for annual external audit process.
- Working in accordance with all relevant legislation, including Australian Accounting Standards, Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission Act 2012, Australian Taxation Law, Goods and Services Act.

Selection Criteria:
SC1 Degree in Accounting with approximately 2 years relevant experience
SC2 Current experience preparing month end closing, balance sheet, profit and loss, cashflow statements, FBT returns, BAS and IAS within Australian Accounting Standards and Tax Rules
SC3 Demonstrated experience in leading financial record keeping (preferably Xero and Calxa) and the treatment of accruals and prepayments
SC4 Demonstrated experience assisting with the preparation of budgets, analysis of financial data, and financial reporting for grant acquittals
SC5 Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including accurate written skills and ability to build and maintain effective relationships across the organisation.
SC6 Cultural awareness and understanding of Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander peoples and cultures and the issues which impact upon them in society.
SC7 Manual driver’s license, and the ability to satisfy child and personal history screening; and current positive notice (Blue Card).
