Job DetailsJob Title: Barista and Head BaristaEmployment Type: Ongoing/Non-OngoingClassification: Parliamentary Service Level 1 & 2Closing Date: 11:30pm AEST, 27 March 2024Contact: Sophie Travis, 6277 5244, sophie.travis@aph.gov.auThe OpportunityThe Department of Parliamentary Services (DPS) is recruiting for a Parliamentary Service Level 1 & 2 Barista and Head Barista within Commercial Operations Branch.The Department of Parliamentary Services (DPS) is seeking customer focused, passionate and hardworking people, to support and grow the catering and events businesses at Australian Parliament House. The APH Catering and Events Team deliver high quality food and beverage services to building occupants and visitors that showcase products of the local region and position APH as a destination of choice.Baristas and Head Baristas are required for the APH Catering and Events Team responsible for a sustainable catering model which is capable of delivering over 500,000 covers annually. Peak service times are Monday - Thursday on parliamentary sitting weeks (approximately 20 weeks per year) and Australian Parliament House is open every day except Christmas Day.Work at an award-winning tourism venue and enjoy free parking, free gym membership and a competitive salary.Who we are looking forOur ideal candidate will have:
  • Minimum 2 years' experience as a skilled barista, with a passion for coffee and knowledge of various brewing techniques.
  • Demonstrated relevant experience in a customer service role, with a keen ability to anticipate and meet the needs of both internal and external guests.
  • Impeccable communication skills, friendly demeanour, and a commitment to delivering exceptional guest service.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of safe food handling, HACCP and compliance regulations and procedures
Eligibility, qualifications and/or other requirements:
  • A current Responsible Service of Alcohol certificate. If not currently held, this certificate must be obtained and be maintained
  • Qualifications in hospitality or retail catering are highly desirable, showcasing your dedication to the industry are highly desirable
  • The occupant of this position must be willing to work according to a roster and work overtime if required. Penalty and overtime rates apply.
  • The occupant of this position is required to wear a uniform as directed and present in a professional manner at all times when on duty.
  • The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (Protected/Restricted) security clearance.

Immediate supervisor: Retail ManagerUnder limited/general direction undertake duties in accordance with the agreed standards for the Parliamentary Service Level 1 classification. The duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:1. As a member of the DPS Catering Team, assist with the delivery food and beverage services at Australian Parliament House for:
  • Staff Dining Room
  • Queens Terrace Café
  • Coffee Hub
  • Coffee Cart, and
  • in other outlets as required
2. Grind, prepare, extract, and serve a high-quality espresso coffee in a timely manner.3. Follow service level standards and standard operating procedures to ensure delivery of food and beverage services is of a high standard and meets stakeholder needs4. Handle all enquiries in a professional, polite, timely, accurate and efficient manner.5. Maintain knowledge of food handling and WHS practices and contemporary hospitality industry trends.6. Maintain a professional rapport and working relationship with fellow team members, stakeholders, building occupant's and visitors7. Other duties as requiredEmployees of DPS are required to be able, and to be seen to be able, to provide professional advice and services to all Senators and Members without favour or prejudice.Additional Duties for Head BaristaAdditional duties for Parliamentary Service Level 2 include, but are not limited to, the following:1. Supervise and deliver barista training for the front of house team.2. Provide accurate and current information to team members on APH Catering/Front of House procedures, guidelines, and policies3. Work closely with retail supervisors to develop and maintain a motivated and high performing team committed to providing a consistent, efficient, and friendly service for customers, and exceeds customer expectations.4. Have accountability for the completion of allocated tasks within required timeframes and in compliance with set procedures.5. SalaryCurrently, the salary range for these positions are:Parliamentary Services Level 1 $53,777 - $62,631 per annum.Parliamentary Services Level 2 $63,885 - $68,584 per annum.Conditions of EmploymentEmployment opportunities at Department of Parliamentary Services are subject to a range of conditions prescribed in the Parliamentary Service Act 1999 which include:
  • Australian citizenship - to be eligible for employment with DPS, applicants must be an Australian Citizen.
  • Security clearance and character clearance - the preferred applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a security clearance at the level specified, as well as complete and be deemed suitable through a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check.
  • Health assessment - a pre-employment health assessment will be required where there are physical or medical requirements for the role.
