About the UQ Poche Centre

We are an Indigenous-led health research centre focusing on Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing. We undertake multidisciplinary research to enhance understanding of diverse health issues affecting Indigenous peoples, reduce health inequity and improve health outcomes.

In addition, we aim to nurture the next generation of Indigenous research leaders. About This Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for a Community Engagement Manager to join the Let's Yarn About Sleep (LYAS) research program within the UQ Poche Centre for Indigenous Health. As the Community Engagement Manager, you will actively build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders of the research program. Rooted in the First Nations cultural values and knowledge, the focus of this role is relationship building and Community Engagement with First Nations peoples, ensuring self-determination and culturally appropriate research practices are embedded in all aspects of research.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders
  • Developing and delivering a Community Engagement Strategy that reflects best practice for engaging with First Nations community groups
  • Monitoring and evaluating stakeholder engagement and communication through the use of a database management system
  • Supporting and guiding the community researchers and foster First Nations empowerment and self-determination
  • Monitoring and tracking deliverables for all First Nations Community Engagement projects and ensuring completion on time and within budget
  • Planning and leading Community Engagement and outreach activities
  • Supervising and mentoring junior team members
  • Establishing and maintaining strategic relationships with key bodies active in the area of sleep health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples; including but not limited to:
    • Lowitja Institute
    • National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO)
    • Sleep advocacy organisations
    • Pea professional bodies
  • Working with research teams to identify pathways to enhance the uptake of research into community and service level programs

This is a full-time (100%), fixed-term position for up to 3 years.

At HEW level 7, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $94,754 - $103,180, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $110,862 - $120,721 annually. As this role is covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases - at least once a year.


About You

The University of Queensland considers that being Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational requirement for this position under s25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991(Qld) and the filling of this position constitute a special/equal opportunity measure under section 8(1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth).

The successful candidate will be required to provide evidence to confirm that they are an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person.

The successful candidate will have:

  • A degree in a relevant field; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training; for leading Community Engagement activities.
  • Demonstrated experience in representing community voices within government and/or not-for-profit sectors. Prior experience working in a health care delivery setting, or a health research services setting would be highly regarded.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing strategic plans.
  • Experience in supervising a small team of community researchers.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills including the ability to communicate effectively with people from a diverse range of educational and cultural backgrounds, particularly with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and organisations.
  • Well-developed writing skills and ability to translate complex information into clear and concise messages.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player who promotes a supportive and cohesive environment.
  • Strong organisational, time management and record-keeping abilities, along with attention to detail.
