Job description

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is looking to recruit Data Analysts across multiple divisions within the agency.
These are permanent and temporary positions at the APS 4 classification level. Successful applicants can work either full-time or part-time hours out of our offices located in Adelaide, Canberra (Belconnen), Melbourne (Docklands), Brisbane, Sydney, Hobart and Perth.
Flexible working arrangements including a hybrid model of working from home and in the office applies.
About the areas
For over 100 years we have used data to produce key statistics, tell stories and inform Australia’s important decisions. The ABS is continually exploring new data sources, data collection methodologies and data analysis techniques to provide the highest quality data and statistics.
There are huge opportunities for the ABS to do more with the right people, which is why we need people with good analytical skills, sound judgement, a drive to learn and try new things, and desire to innovate through collaboration.
We are looking to fill a number of APS4 Data Analyst roles. These roles are in a variety teams, across multiple Divisions, producing key economic or social statistics. These statistics are used by both governments and the private sector for a range of policy formulation and planning.
We currently have vacancies in the following areas:
our Census and Population Division, which is responsible for the five yearly national Census of Population and Housing as well as regular releases of data on the population, international arrivals and departures, migration, and migrants
our People and Place Division which is responsible for producing key statistics across a range of areas including education, labour, health, housing, crime, social characteristics, and climate adaption
our Prices and Transformation Divisionis responsible for producing key economic indicators including the Consumer Price Index (CPI), Wage Price Index (WPI), Producer Price Indexes (PPI) and Wage Price Index (WPI). The Division is also responsible for the delivery of the Big Data, Timely Insights Phase 2 (BDTI2) Program which is focused on moving significant parts of our data and statistical business to the ABS’ new cloud analytics environment.
This will enable the production of new insights including a complete, monthly measure of the CPI
our Economy and Environment Division which is responsible for producing economic and environmental releases such as National Accounts, International Trade, Land Accounts and Agricultural Statistics
our Statistical Production and Digital Services Division which is responsible for the design and collection of business and household data, compiling statistics from a variety of data sources (including surveys and big data), integrating data from across government and designing and managing digital products, channels, and services
our Statistical Infrastructure Division which is responsible for standards and classifications, geospatial services, and other statistical infrastructure assets. We are responsible for foundational data infrastructure that enables the integration of geospatial and statistical data, including the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS), the Address Register and the ABS Business Register
About the roles
Your responsibilities, depending on the role, may include:
analysing data from statistical collections or administrative sources
communicating findings, using judgement and real-world insights
applying statistical frameworks, classifications, standards and concepts that underpin the statistics
working with internal and external clients to contribute to the development of data requirements and solutions
critical thinking and reasoning: anticipating and analysing issues and developing logical conclusions
contributing to the design and testing of collection questionnaires and survey forms.
The key duties of the position include:What we are looking for (selection criteria)
We are looking for people who are keen to widen their skill set, but have most or all the following:
sound analytical and conceptual skills, including the ability to problem solve and make evidence-based decisions
ability to work in and add value to a team
good oral, and written communication skills
ability to work flexibly in a changing environment.
Also desirable are:
previous work experience in a data compilation, statistical analysis or geospatial analysis role
previous experience of working in and contributing to a high performing team
academic qualifications in statistics, data science, mathematics, econometrics, economics, accounting, finance, psychology/social sciences, demography, geospatial information science and other fields with a strong quantitative component
experience with or the ability to learn one or more statistical programming languages such as Python, R, SAS or SQL.
EligibilityTo be eligible for these positions you
must be an Australian citizen at the time you apply
will need to undertake pre-employment checks, including national police check and health assessment
may need to obtain (or hold) and maintain at least Baseline security clearance.
NotesThese positions are only available to be filled in the locations specified (Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Hobart, Perth, Melbourne and Sydney), based on the needs of the hiring area and to meet the requirements of being a merit based process.
The ABS will negotiate relocation arrangements, consistent with the ABS Enterprise Agreement 2019 if you are required to relocate.
ABS employees who have access to market sensitive information are restricted in market trading activities. You may not be allowed to trade in financial products while employed. These roles may be restricted in trading.
If found suitable but not offered a role you will be placed in the merit pool. If you agree in your application this means you may be offered a similar role in the ABS or another APS agency.
