Located 15km from the Townsville CBD, Sun Metals is one of the most technologically advanced zinc refineries in the world, producing Special High Grade Zinc metal, Zinc Alloy metal and by-products of Sulfuric Acid, Copper, Cadmium, and Zinc Ferrite. Our process involves Roasting, Leaching, Purification, Electrolysis and Casting with sales to both domestic and international markets.

The Sun Metals site lies in the coastal zone adjacent to Cleveland Bay. The extensive monitoring conducted throughout the surrounding landscapes and particularly the aquatic ecosystems in the adjoining wetland areas offer a particularly diverse opportunity to the successful applicant.
Reporting to the Environmental Superintendent, the Environmental Advisor will focus on the development and implementation of the environmental management system, conduct environmental monitoring, investigate incidents and participate in improvement projects on site.
In addition to duties conducted at the Sun Metals site, this position also offers the opportunity to support our ship loading and unloading operations at the Port of Townsville.
Key responsibilities:
- Development and implementation of the Environmental Management System;
- Investigate environmental incidents, implement corrective actions and review effectiveness of actions;
- Assist with the development and delivery of environmental training;
- Assist in auditing the Environmental Management System and refinery operations to ensure continual improvement and regulatory compliance;
- Conduct Environmental Monitoring as per the SMC Environmental Monitoring Program, including associated data management and reporting requirements for regulatory compliance;
- Participate in improvement projects and improvement investigations as determined by the Environmental Superintendent.
To be successful in this role you will have the following competencies:
- Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Science or Engineering
- Experience with the application of ISO 14001 Environmental Management System Standards
- Sound knowledge and understanding of environmental laws and regulations
- Experience with collating, interrogating and acting on environmental data
- Excellent computer skills (Word, Excel, Microsoft Office Programs)
- Heavy industry experience is desirable
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Current manual driver’s license.
