Why your role matters:
The Financial Control & Compliance function has accountability for the university-wide Financial Control environment and associated compliance policies and processes, including statutory financial reporting and external audit, controlled entity accounting and reporting, technical accounting advisory, infrastructure and asset accounting, and tax management and advisory.
Financial Control Accountants provide high quality, specialised and complex accounting support in accordance with UNSW policies, procedures, and processes with an objective of maintaining and/or improving the Financial Control and compliance environment across the University. This position works across all teams within the Financial Control & Compliance function.
The Financial Control Accountant reports to the relevant Manager and has no direct reports.
Responsibilities:
- Accurately and efficiently prepare and process standard month-end and year-end financial reports and other routine reporting as required.
- Perform routine monthly reconciliations, in a timely manner, with necessary supporting documentation.
- Assist with the identification, analysis, and investigation of reconciling items to ensure that they are properly understood, are genuine, and are cleared promptly with a solutions/ improvement focus for systems and or processes.
- Provide excellent customer service through the investigation of and response to enquiries from internal and external stakeholders.
- Work collaboratively to respond to peaks in demand across the function to with a focus on efficient and effective delivery and continuous improvement.
- Role may include specific focus assisting on tax (preparing returns GST, FBT and payroll tax), statutory reporting for UNSW parent or controlled entities (end-to-end process for audited financial statements) or compliance (monitoring activities and investigation of transactions).
Skills and Experience
- Tertiary qualification in accounting or part qualified CA/CPA with a solid grasp of accounting/technical concepts with experience in accounting providing an added advantage.
- Demonstrated ability to proactively and successfully resolve routine problems, take responsibility for issues in a timely and efficient manner and meet stakeholder expectations.
- Demonstrated attention to detail and prioritisation while operating promptly and efficiently.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills to successfully manage stakeholder expectations, achieve Finance outcomes, and work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Broad understanding of technical accounting knowledge and skills in applying the relevant Australian Accounting Standards and Interpretations.
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Excel and other relevant programs, and experience with finance systems e.g., PeopleSoft.
