WHY the Y?
The YMCA was founded in 1844 during the Industrial Revolution in England, a time of great despair and poverty. From its start, through to the early 1900s, the focus was on the welfare of young men and related social concerns.
Today YMCA associations and branches can be found all over the world. To be part of the YMCA today you don’t need to be young, male, or Christian! The YMCA is often abbreviated to ‘the Y’, which incorporates all young people and communities regardless of gender orientation, ethnicity or religion.
YMCA associations are strongly rooted in their communities and offer a variety of programs and services based on local priorities and issues affecting young people and their communities. The Y is committed to promoting empowerment, social justice and peace for young people and their communities through alignment with these four global pillars – Community Wellbeing, Meaningful Work, a Sustainable Planet and a Just World.
