Padua College is seeking an Outdoor Education Support Officerto join our dedicated Outdoor Education team. This position is permanent part-time, working full-time hours during school term time only.
Outdoor education at Padua College fosters individual growth through infused teamwork, collaboration and resilience. Our young men are challenged to stretch their understanding and embrace leadership as they learn to be better versions of themselves in a supported environment. Our Outdoor Education programs are based on site at our privately owned Outdoor Education Centre, Amaroo located on the Sunshine Coast.
The Role
Reporting to the Outdoor Education Coordinator, you will work closely to engage young people and supporting, in meaningful, safe and appropriate therapeutic adventure activities and journeys. This role has a strong focus on Risk Management and Operational Safety.
This role will require the candidate to stay onsite overnight at Amaroo during camp programs to assist with overnight, morning and evening supervisory duties as required. All other times work will take place from the College Campus based in Kedron.
Ideal applicants must demonstrate experience in leading outdoor programs in safe and effective ways, you must be confident in following the College’s Outdoor Education learning framework, Building Resilience, Goal Setting, Developing Independence, Leadership, Connecting with Others and Protecting the Natural World.
Key Accountabilities
- Assist in the development of exceptional Outdoor Education programs across the College from Year 5 to Year 12 at Padua College in conjunction with the Outdoor Education Coordinator.
- Assist the Coordinator to deliver an Outdoor Education program meeting the expectations of the Leadership team and curriculum links for students in year 5 to 12.
- Professionally lead and instruct activities within the Amaroo Outdoor Education.
- Ensure that Australian Adventure Activity Standards and requirements are adhered to on all programs.
- Assist in the provision of program briefings and debriefings regarding Outdoor Education programs for parents/carers, staff, and students.
- Assist in maintaining detailed risk management plans, standard operating procedures, and safe work statements for all areas of Outdoor Education.
- Ensure all student permission and medical forms are accounted for before each Outdoor Education program.
- In consultation with the College Nurse, assist with the processes that ensure all medical information is up to date and that any potential concerns are addressed with all staff attending the camp.
- Assist in educating parents/carers and members of the College community regarding Outdoor Education.
- Assist in the mentoring and training of casual Outdoor Education staff.
- Ensure that documentation, which reflects developments in the Outdoor education program, is prepared, implemented, and evaluated in a systematic manner.
Program Activities included but are not limited to: Surfing, Mountain Biking, Canoeing, Rock Climbing, Abseiling, Ropes Course, Navigation, Bush Walking/Expeditions, Group Reflection, Goal Setting.
It is expected that the successful applicant be suitably qualified and have:
- Cert III or IV, Diploma or Degree in Outdoor Recreation.
- First Aid Certificate (Wilderness First Aid preferred).
- QLD Working with Children Clearance (Blue Card).
- Relevant instructional and/or proficiency certificates, or willingness to undertake certification, in a range of outdoor pursuits including canoeing, sailing, bushwalking, orienteering, cycling, challenge ropes course and rock climbing/abseiling.
- Current Driver’s Licence.
