Full Time Paralegal (Real Estate Finance) Role
Watson Wallace, a Melbourne finance law firm, has an opportunity for an experienced paralegal to join our team on a full time basis.
Who, What, Why & Where
Look, our founder and Managing Partner (Simon) spent a lot of time putting together our website and it has all the information about who we are, what we do, why we do it and even where we are.
Check it out: www.watsonwallace.com.au and feel free to tell us how super it is.
We are very good at what we do, we are a collegiate and highly supportive firm, at times irreverent and clients like us because we understand their business, their risks and their ambitions.
We work to live, not the other way around.
This role , is one that will be really important for us. We’re not offering a job – we want to help you keep building your career.
To be fair, this time we are (only) looking for someone already versed in being a paralegal, and explicitly one relating to property law or commercial finance. Simon is a good trainer, but if that’s not you, best stop here.
Day in the Life
You will draft and take through to settlement the required documentation for small, medium & large commercial finance (almost always involving property) transactions. Searches, drafting, settlements, banking, billing, internal support, negotiations and most of all, buying in. Every question is welcomed and we work on most things together, but we’ll expect you to hit the ground running, or at least jogging.
We’ll also expect you to be suggestive – we are always looking to improve our systems, for both risk and reward reasons.
There will be plenty of admin along the way, to be sure, which is really important, not least because we deal with a LOT of money, but the subject matter is interesting, our clients are very nice and smart and we are not just saying that because they pay us well.
Did we mention that every six months you have to work remotely at a Victorian regional location of your choosing – we think it’s important for your mental health. We’ll also pay for you and your family/ partner/ dog/ book to have an extra night away to do whatever it is you want to do. Yes, we agree that is ace.
We value really good tech skills. Not so much typing speeds, but more accuracy, commitment to good presentation (Simon is a formatting nerd), double-checking, bespoke and standard doc-generation and yes the ability to write coherent sentences in professional ways would be nice.
We work on Office 365 so we’d very much like someone who’s very familiar with how to drive that. Rather important. We use LEAP, which can be clunky but it works for now.
Your experience?
Again, we need someone who can drive PEXA like they stole it, is a precise generator of finance documents, knows how to spot a risk in searches, contracts of sale and the like and isn’t flustered by having lots on.
You may just want a change of scenery and to be part of a firm where you’re more valued for who you are and what you do. Maybe big law is not what you hoped and you want to be an integral part of a firm, not just another number.
Do we need to say we want someone trustworthy? I hope not, but we’ll say it anyway.
Our clients value confidentiality and direct counsel, so as your confidence grows we will expect you to be more assured in your communications. They expect and are used to receiving strong service, delivered in a timely manner and we all enjoy each other’s success.
We also need someone to help plan our Christmas merch/ party.
To be a success
We work hard, when we need to, but are always flexible depending on your individual needs.
We’ll set you up at home (feel free to WFH 2-3 days a week) and in the office. There are no forms to fill out if you need to go to the dentist, there are no timesheets and we have a 9.30am start time, but we really just do what we need to do to get what needs to be done, done.
If work needs doing before or after usual hours, so be it. Swings and roundabouts and all that.
We have a total commitment to inclusion and diversity, and will not abide any power games.
What’s on offer?
We’ll pay you something you are happy to be paid and which we are happy to pay you. That sounds vague, but something commensurate with your experience. It’s fine if you let us know what you think that is. We are hardly Goldman Sachs, but we don’t underpay.
Our office is small, but with expansive communal facilities. We’re central and while our building doesn’t have marble and parquetry, there is always functions and events nearby to mingle with other tenants and meet new people, if you want to.
Next?
That’s about it, really. Thanks for getting this far.
It’s quite exciting for us to be doing this.
We are professional, ambitious, supportive and experienced. If you are at least three of those, then please do let us know.
