The Faculty of Science teaches approximately 7000 full-time student equivalents, with an academic staff of approximately 500 and general staff of 300. The Faculty is one of the largest and most complex faculties of UNSW Sydney. It comprises the School of Aviation, Biological Earth and Environmental Science (BEES), Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences (BABS), Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), Mathematics and Statistics, Psychology, and Physics. It also includes several major Research Centres and field stations.

The EDI Project Officer plays a key role within the Faculty of Science in assisting with the ongoing development, delivery, and evaluation of initiatives to support the Faculty of Science’s strategic Equity Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) priorities. The EDI Project Officer will provide practical and efficient project support for the EDI team and key stakeholders.

The role entails coordinating and managing the general administration of EDI projects, providing project coordination and support, reporting and analytical support, developing communications, building key internal and external relationships, and providing support for key programs and projects, with a focus on high school outreach initiatives.

The Faculty of Science supports flexible work arrangements, including hybrid options (mixed on-campus and work from home) and Internal applicants are encouraged to consider utilizing the Internal Transfer Program

About the role

  • $96k - $103k plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed Term – 12 months
  • Part-time (21 hours per week)

The role of EDI Project Officer reports to the Senior EDI Project Officer and has no direct reports.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Provide practical and proactive project support and administrative services to project teams and stakeholders.
  • Coordinate project administration including developing project plans and schedules, coordinating workshops and meetings, managing assigned actions and follow-ups, and project status reporting.
  • Assist in the delivery and evaluation of Faculty initiatives that enhance the equity, diversity, and inclusion goals of the Faculty with a particular focus on high school outreach programs targeted at underrepresented student cohorts.
  • Manage financial requirements of various projects including tracking expenditures against defined budgets.
  • Develop and manage effective communications with key stakeholders including through newsletters, the Faculty intranet, and website.
  • Coordinate meetings for the Science EDI Working Group (SEDIWG) including draft agendas, correspondences, briefing notes and room bookings as required.
  • Support continuous business improvement through proactively identifying and creating operational solutions that enhance the outcomes of the Science EDI team.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a wider team to design and develop Faculty projects and initiatives to achieve operational and strategic goals.
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct.
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

About the successful applicant(Selection criteria)

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification with subsequent relevant experience or equivalent competence gained through any combination or education, training, and experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail and the ability to liaise effectively with a range of stakeholders.
  • Experience in managing complex issues related to diversity and inclusion.
  • Ability to develop and implement practical and sustainable solutions in the EDI space.
  • Sound numeracy skills with the ability to understand financial information, monitor budgets, and evaluate data.
  • Project implementation experience, with an understanding of the project life cycle and development of project plans, objectives, and documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate administrative processes in a complex environment, problem solve, and handle highly sensitive information with discretion and integrity.
  • Demonstrated experience working with a range of computer systems and applications, including all Microsoft 360 applications (Teams, Outlook, Excel, One Drive, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks, and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team but also to take initiatives and work independently while managing competing deadlines.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training
