The Community and City Services Division puts people, families and community at the forefront of our work. It strives to ensure that Melbourne is a city for all, one that is liveable, healthy and vibrant and meets the needs of a diverse and growing population. The Prosecutions Team is responsible for the delivery of quality, customer focused service in relation to the prosecution of infringements in line with legislation and internal policies and guidelines. The team provide services in relation to the prosecution of infringement offences via Fines Victoria and the Magistrates’ Court on behalf of the City of Melbourne. The team is responsible for key improvement activities/projects including case management of repeat offenders.
The objective of the role is the delivery of a quality customer focused service via:
- Representing Council at legal proceedings
- Conducting reviews of infringements in relations to Court Elections, matters referred to court by Council and Fines Victoria matters (Enforcement Review referrals including Family Violence, Special Circumstances and Persons unaware casework )
- Compiling briefs of evidence in preparation for prosecution at court
- Handling telephone enquiries relating to prosecution of infringements and court matters
- Liaising with other Branches of Council (eg. Customer Relations and Legal Services)
- Liaising with customers and external service providers (e.g Legal Service Providers and Expert witnesses)
- Working with other teams within the Branch and Council who issue infringement notices in order to improve case outcomes

The Prosecutions Officer will require:
- Experience in managing prosecution matters with a strong administrative background.
- Understanding and familiarity with the Magistrates’ Court and Fines Victoria processes, procedures and legislative requirements.
- Demonstrated ability in the application of legislation administered by Local Government or similar authorities.
- Highly developed interpersonal skills and proven written and oral communication skills including experience in drafting correspondence.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct investigations, undertake research and prepare quality written reports and submissions.
