About the team

The Performance and Evaluation Team provides rigorous evaluation expertise to guide the planning and conduct of evaluation activities across all cancer control activities undertaken by CCNSW. Cancer control activities include prevention, screening, advocacy, supportive care, and information and practical support for people impacted by cancer.  The Performance and Evaluation Team is a small, dynamic, productive, virtual team with expertise spanning public health, epidemiology, statistics, and quantitative and qualitative evaluative methods. We are seeking a team member with a 'can-do' attitude, who can juggle multiple projects, who is comfortable working both collaboratively and independently.

About the role:

Reporting to the Performance and Evaluation Lead, the Senior Evaluation Specialist will play an important role in supporting rigorous evaluation activities for new projects and initiatives. The primary purpose of the Senior Evaluation Specialist is to conceptualise and operationalise evaluation activities for new projects and initiatives being led by teams from Cancer Prevention and Advocacy and the Cancer Information and Support Services Divisions. The Senior Evaluation Specialist will be required to design evaluation activities, collect and analyse data, and present evaluation findings to inform program management and the translation of evidence into program and policy recommendations.

Key responsibilities of the role:

  • Conceptualise, conduct and report on evaluations for new projects and initiatives. 
  • Evaluation planning (development of program logic models, developing evaluation plans in partnership with program staff and other members of the Performance and Evaluation Unit, liaising with a range of stakeholders)
  • Overseeing evaluation activities. Tasks may include:
    • Conducting literature reviews,
    • Planning and organising primary qualitative and quantitative data collection, including participant sampling and recruitment, timelining, and data storage,
    • Designing qualitative and quantitative evaluation instruments, including survey questionnaires, interview/focus group discussion guides, and observation schedules,
    • Undertaking (or providing advice and supervising) qualitative and quantitative fieldwork, including surveys, focus groups, and interviews with staff, health care providers, clients, and community members,
    • Analysing large, complex qualitative and quantitative data-sets using a variety of techniques, interpreting results, and disseminating findings via a range of different formats,
    • Preparing written reports.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues in the Performance and Evaluation Unit, and across other CCNSW divisions and with key external stakeholders as required.

About you

Essential:

  • Postgraduate tertiary qualifications in an appropriate discipline such as public health, epidemiology, psychology or social science, or demonstrated relevant equivalent professional experience and training
  • Evaluation and/or research experience in health promotion, public health or health services organisations
  • Skills and experience in using a range of process, impact and outcome measurement approaches and techniques; preferably with experience in health-related data
  • Experience using a range of qualitative and quantitative research and evaluation methods and capacity to coach and advise staff in their appropriate use
  • Ability to develop and oversee data collection approaches to identify practice and service development needs (including focus groups, interviews, surveys, literature reviews, policy analyses)
  • Strong quantitative skills, including ability to select and conduct appropriate statistical analyses, and capacity to transfer knowledge and expertise
  • Familiarity with collecting and analysing qualitative data
  • Demonstrated ability to develop strategic, productive and constructive relationships with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to effectively manage time, conduct concurrent projects and work collaboratively with teams as well as autonomously
  • Competence in a variety of software applications including MS Office suite, SharePoint and survey platforms (i.e. SurveyMonkey).

Desirable:

  • Familiarity with commonly used statistical software packages (e.g., SPSS, Excel) and research/project management software (e.g., MS Project, Endnote or similar)
  • Experience with outcomes relevant to cancer control.
