About the Role
An exciting opportunity to be part of Santos’ Health Safety and Environment team. This is a senior managerial role with broad remit to lead the Health and Safety (H&S) for Eastern Australia and Papua New Guinea (EA&PNG) Regional Business Unit. This is a complex role due to the international scope, multiple regulatory jurisdictions, and diversity of risks.
The core purpose is to support the General Manager HSE to develop and implement the H&S strategic vision for EA&PNG, in alignment with the H&S Function. This incorporates the implementation and continuous improvement of fit for purpose management system, frameworks and programs that centre on preventing harm, minimising risks, meeting compliance obligations and promoting a culture of safety and care across Santos.
This role is based in Brisbane, with ad-hoc travel to Eastern Australia and Papua New Guinea.
Accountabilities are delivered in line with the Santos company values and Santos Management System (SMS). Key responsibilities of the role include:
- Provide H&S leadership, direction, expertise, and support across EA&PNG.
- Actively engage with EA&PNG senior leaders to understand business needs, promote H&S, and drive the most effective outcomes.
- Support the GM HSE to develop, implement and communicate the EA&PNG H&S strategy for improving performance and achieving H&S vision, goals, objectives, and targets.
- Lead, manage, mentor, and develop EA&PNG H&S team members to enable the team to deliver on H&S strategy, objectives, and improvements.
- Work with Functional H&S team to contribute to and support organisational H&S strategy, systems, programs, and initiatives that drive improvements.
- Actively promote a culture of care and curiosity through key programs such as STRIVE, frontline safety leadership program and recognition framework.
- Ensure appropriate H&S operating model is adopted to optimise effectiveness. Build a suitable capability framework to achieve this, with the view that the key role of H&S team is to coach, facilitate, support and build capability of Leaders.
- Support the development of H&S management systems and integrated (layered) assurance plans with HSE Systems and Assurance team.
- Understand, embed into normal everyday operations, and monitor the effectiveness the H&S management system for EA&PNG, inclusive of Santos Life Saving Rules, STRIVE, H&S risk management, contractor management, H&S capability framework, incident investigation and learning, consultation and communication, and assurance, compliance management, emergency management and IMT, occupational hygiene, psychosocial risk.
- Support physical security management for EA sites, including development, implementation, and maintenance of security management plans, with direction from Senior Security Adviser in Health Safety and Security Function.
- Ensure EA&PNG sites/assets and operations have current and workable H&S management plans that outline how key management system, compliance, and risk control requirements relevant to the site are addressed.

Technical competencies for this position are:
- Demonstrated experience in the Oil and gas industry.
- Partner collaboratively, engage and influence across multiple leadership stakeholder groups.
- Experience in leadership/management position including strong leadership capability.
- Strong working knowledge of HSE legislation, risk management, and compliance requirements
- Demonstrated competency in uplifting organisational Health and Safety maturity and capability.
Essential qualifications required for this position are:
- Tertiary qualification in Occupational Health and Safety (Degree or Masters desirable)
- Significant demonstrated experience managing H&S in large, complex organisations and high-risk industry.
- Professional certification with Australian Institute of Health and Safety (or equivalent international body) desirable
- Lead investigator qualifications (ICAM/Taproot) desirable
