Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) are currently seeking a Senior Planner to work in our Franchise Projects team. We are currently seeking a Senior Planner to join the Signalling, Power & Operational Control Systems (SPOCS) Projects Team who support the Franchise Portfolio in Metro's Projects Division. The Franchise Projects portfolio includes all projects delivered by Metro Trains on behalf of the Department of Transport (Formerly PTV) and the SPOCS team support and deliver of these projects. These projects range from minor network enhancements to major capital improvements and new infrastructure. Our clients are becoming more diverse in the current climate, and now include NELP, RPV, VicTrack, Development Victoria and TFV.
About the Role
The Senior Planner is responsible for coordinating the planning function for a group of projects under a program of works & developing and managing detailed schedules for the Franchise portfolio of works. In this role you will monitor and report on the progress of the project, program and provision of project controls advice while providing support to Project Managers and Program Managers within the Franchise Portfolio. This role supports the projects across the project life cycle providing technical and strategic advice, analytical oversight and support and guidance to maximise business outcomes.
This is a full-time permanent opportunity, primarily based between MTM's head office in Docklands as well as flexible working options. As an MTM employee, you will have access to free travel along the network.
Key Areas of Responsibility
Reporting to the Planning Manager, the Senior Planner will:
- Ensure consistent and robust implementation of planning and scheduling processes across a program of works.
- Develop and maintain schedules in order to provide progress reports for projects throughout their lifecycle. Rollup project schedules into overall program schedules and present overall program reports where required.
- Assist optimisation of portfolio level plan by leading and integrating the planning deliverables including, work breakdown structure, resource loading etc. across the program.
- Input to the development of standard planning procedures, guidelines, templates, coding etc. to allow consistent planning protocols across the planning team and support compliance to the standards.
- Produce project and program status reports (dashboards, curves, histograms, baseline variances etc.). Provide guidance to project teams on schedule development. Identify critical paths, areas of concern and suggestions for improvement. Integrate project status information to enable schedule performance reviews. Employ creative data visualisations techniques and applications to facilitate project team awareness.
- Apply consistent WBS, baseline, project ID's, coding, resourcing, logic, relationships, layouts etc. across projects.
- Develop project specific Basis of Scheduling documents for required projects.
- Develop and maintain relationships with estimating and cost control groups to ensure all awareness of all aspects of Project Controls. Align schedule and cost breakdown across projects.
- Deliver planning awareness and training programs to the wider project teams to ensure awareness and compliance to MTM Project Management Framework.
- Apply earned value management tools and techniques to interpret data and provide timely insight and recommendations on project and program performance.
- Ensure the project planning approach remains fit for purpose by incorporating lessons learnt and feedback to optimise planning processes and standards.
- Interface with external work parties and participate in internal planning sessions with all disciplines to create robust schedules in line with the works readiness.
- Be actively involved in all occupation pre planning sessions, lesson learnt and other sessions as required with the wider occupation & construction teams.
- Tertiary qualification in Project Management, Engineering or equivalent.
- 5 to 10 years' experience in Planning & Scheduling.
- Experience in planning large scale complex projects throughout the project lifecycle.
- Knowledge of current planning cost control, project management techniques.
- High level of experience in using Primavera.
- High level of experience in using Word, Excel & Outlook.
- Experience with EVM principals and applications
- Experience in rail projects & understanding of rail construction and railway operations is highly desirable.
- Motivate, mentor and develop others.
- Demonstrate competency in understanding and developing different level of schedules, including program summaries.
- Analyse quality of schedule, schedule health and metrics.
- Communicate effectively with all levels of management and staff (verbal and written).
