About us
The Curtin Institute of Radio Astronomy (CIRA) is a multi-disciplinary research institute engaged in a range of projects involving or motivated by radio astronomy. CIRA’s activities draw together academic research and professional staff from a variety of science, engineering, and computing disciplines to tackle unique and demanding challenges in radio astronomy. CIRA is the lead organisation and operator of the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), and a key participant in the international Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project. CIRA is also the Curtin University node of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR), a joint venture with the University of Western Australia.

Your new role
The successful candidate will join the Software and Systems Team. They will be responsible for the management of servers and networks that support the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) radio telescope, an SKA (Square Kilometre Array) precursor. The MWA is a global collaboration, led by CIRA, to explore the farthest reaches of the Universe from the West Australian outback.     
  
The successful candidate will be looking to advance their sysadmin career in a diverse role within a supportive team environment for this exciting, cutting-edge big data science project:
  
The sysadmin will:

  • Bring a strong security focus to the management of MWA’s network and server infrastructure.
  • Plan, design, configure, deploy, document, secure, monitor, upgrade and troubleshoot networks and servers (physical and virtual).
  • Configure and monitor servers, firewalls and network devices to ensure system security.
  • Manage and regularly test backups of mission-critical systems.
  • Contribute to the achievement of area objectives and priorities by providing expert advice to area management.
  • Implement audit requirements related to system access and security.
  • Proactively identify risks and opportunities to continually improve system security, efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with vendors, DTS, CSIRO, Pawsey, AARNet and other stakeholders.
  • Maintain a suitable level of knowledge of supported technologies and the use of relevant tools to enable effective service delivery.
  • Contribute to building capability within the team, providing knowledge sharing and coaching to staff.
  • Undertake other activities which the incumbent might reasonably be expected to do, and which are consistent with the accountabilities and responsibilities as listed above.
  • Note that interstate and/or overseas travel may be required, and a level of fitness commensurate with the position may be required.

Essential Criteria:
  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree in information technology / computer science or equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a sysadmin or related role.
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of Linux server administration & network design and configuration.
  • Up to date knowledge of cybersecurity principles, implementation and compliance.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to construct documentation and articulate technical information clearly and concisely to stakeholders of varying technical knowledge.
  • Demonstrated ability to organise and prioritise tasks/requests to ensure stakeholder needs are met.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively autonomously as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Current Australian work rights that enable up to a minimum of 37.5 hours per week during standard business hours for the duration of the role.
  • Candidates must be eligible and suitable to hold an Australian Government NV1 Security Clearance. Please refer to further details below.
Desirable Criteria:
  • Previous experience in a university/research IT environment.
  • Experience deploying server and network hardware in a data centre environment.
  • Experience with Red Hat and/or Ubuntu Linux.
  • Experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS).
  • Experience with VMWare vSphere.
  • A Cisco Networking Certification would be highly regarded.

The position is based in Perth and applications from interstate are welcome, however you must be willing to relocate to Perth, Western Australia within a reasonable timeframe and for the duration of the position at your own cost.
  
Australian Security Clearance
  
Applicants can familiarise themselves with the basic requirements and checks that are undertaken  during a security clearance application, outlined on the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency website (refer to ‘Applicants’ tab).  Note that you do not have to undertake the security clearance application process as a prerequisite for applying for the role. You must simply check the requirements and confirm that you are eligible and suitable to hold the security clearance. All applications are encouraged and welcomed.
  
Full details will be provided to the successful candidate, and the security clearance process will only commence  upon commencement of employment. CIRA will support the successful candidate through the security clearance application process including payment of costs associated with the application & process, provision of sponsorship documentation, and flexibility to complete requirements and attend relevant appointment during working hours.
  
This position does not include application support for Australian work visas.
