About us

Walalakoo Aboriginal Corporation, based in Derby, is a prominent organization representing the Nyikina Mangala people of the Kimberley region in Western Australia. Our vision is to be a self-sufficient organisation that adopts the world's best practice in environmental and agricultural sustainability and provides social and material prosperity to Nyikina Mangala communities. We are seeking a Nyikina Mangala Women’s Ranger Program Development Officer with a drive and passion to support our Traditional Owners of the Nyikina Mangala Determination area.

About the position

The position is an exciting opportunity to support and improve Nyikina Mangala Country. The successful candidate will assist in developing a plan and collective vision for looking after Country and build the basis of a women’s Ranger Program.

Tasks & Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate on-Country consultation workshops to engage with the Nyikina Mangala community members and elders to identify a collective vision for the women's Ranger Program.
  • Work closely with community members to conduct comprehensive assessments of Nyikina Mangala Country to identify and prioritise sites, priority areas, and key land management objectives.
  • Develop a culturally sensitive and community-endorsed plan for the women's Ranger Program, ensuring the plan integrates traditional ecological knowledge and contemporary land management practices.
  • Collaborate to build the foundation of the women's Ranger Program, including defining roles, responsibilities, and governance structures.
  • Provide ongoing support and guidance to Rangers and Traditional Owners involved in the program.
  • Monitor and evaluate the implementation of the program plan to assess its effectiveness in achieving desired outcomes for health and land management on Country and adjusting the program plan as needed.
  • Promote the women's Ranger Program within the Nyikina Mangala community and with external stakeholders to generate support and additional resources

You will:

  • Have a strong understanding of Indigenous land management, natural resource management, Healthy Country Plans and Indigenous Protection Areas;
  • Be willing and able to work in a regional location and undertake field work on-country alongside the Nyikina Mangala Rangers;
  • Have experience building partnerships/relationships with research and philanthropic bodies;
  • Be experienced developing and implementing project plans, schedules, budgets and risk management, reporting to funding bodies and collecting information.
