The Role
If you have a Work Health and safety (WHS) background and an interest in assisting healthcare delivery, then this may be the position for you. In this role you will be responsible for the management and coordination of WHS across the eight Defence health centres, and the headquarters, across the Victoria/Tasmania region. Reporting to the Commanding Officer of Joint Health Unit - Victoria/Tasmania, you will manage the implementation and continuous improvement of WHS management systems, whilst supporting managers and employees to maintain a safe and healthy workplace.
With a thorough understanding of relevant WHS legislation, you will be expected to achieve work outcomes with autonomy and accountability. To carry out your duties you will need strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to learn quickly, work collaboratively, and exercise subject matter expertise in the interpretation and practical application of WHS policy.
About our Team
Joint Health Unit - Victoria/Tasmania (JHU-VT) is responsible for the delivery of clinical and occupational health to members of the Australian Defence Force, through eight health facilities across the region located in metropolitan Melbourne, Wodonga, Puckapunyal, HMAS Cerberus, East Sale, and Hobart.
The APS6 WHS Manager position is part of the JHU-VT Headquarters, reporting to the Commanding Officer, at the regional headquarters in Victoria Barracks Melbourne. The staff in the HQ and across the region are a blended workforce of military, contract, and APS personnel working together as one team.
The position of the APS WHS Manager is vital to ensuring Defence health facilities operate as intended, ensuring that all staff have a safe workplace. By supporting our facilities, this position ensures that health support can be provided to deliver to the capability of the Australian Defence Force.
Our Ideal Candidate
A self-starter, our ideal candidate would have significant knowledge and practical experience in WHS in the Commonwealth Government environment, and be able to bring that experience into the health domain. You will be comfortable with the need to comply with procedures, policy, legislation and regulatory frameworks. With an attention to detail, you will quickly be able to assess complex issues and determine a way forward, leveraging your professional expertise to take responsibility and resolve WHS issues impacting health service outcomes.
You would have an ability to manage multiple tasks, and communicate effectively in person, by phone, email, and will have a good understanding of modern computer applications. You will work autonomously but will value teamwork and the support of those around you. You would be able to travel periodically to Defence facilities across the region.
