Job description

The Australian Industry Trade College (AITC) is unlike any other senior school. We’re for young people who seek a deliberately different educational experience. An industry-driven one. For those who want to learn in the classroom, within workplaces, and on the job. We’re for those young people who seek to start building real-world strengths and skills now, not only in the future.

We are looking for a Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) Advisor to provide advice and support to internal and external stakeholders across a wide range of critical WHS functions including compliance, reporting and management of the safety management system.

As the primary contact for employees and leaders concerning safety-related matters, you will design, implement, and monitor fit-for-purpose, effective site-specific health, safety, and environmental operations and tasks at all AITC locations.

An integral member of the People team you will also assist in integrating change and contributing to WHS projects to establish operating processes and protocols to drive a consistent College-wide approach to WHS.

This 'value-add' role represents our continued commitment to proactively maintain, improve and enhance AITC operations relevant to WHS activities and systems, to ensure compliance with local and international standards.

 Responsibilities will include:

  • Designing, implementing, and maintaining WHS policies and procedures to meet legislative requirements and meet organisational needs
  • Monitoring WHS performance, implementing the audit schedule, conducting regular site inspections, completing risk assessments, and identifying control measures
  • Comprehensive WHS reporting for the Executive Leadership Team (ELT), Board, and Senior Leadership Team (SLT)
  • Overseeing the continued development and maintenance of the Work Health Safety Management System (WHSMS)
  • Reviewing and reporting on major incidents as required under the WHSMS, liaising with the regulator, if required
  • Aligning WHS activities across all AITC schools by collaborating effectively with young people, facilities, and school campus leaders
  • Acting as Rehabilitation and Return to Work Advisor, liaising with Workers’ Compensation Insurance, medical professionals and the broader People team to effectively resolve claims and facilitate timely return to pre-incident duties wherever possible
  • Ensuring staff are inducted and trained to ensure they are compliant with company and campus WHS policies and procedures
  • Regularly meeting and communicating with key stakeholders, including regular briefings with the CEO/Executive Principal

Our values play a critical role in cultivating culture. They set the standards for how we behave, interact with others, make decisions, and choose to act. They are:

  • Think progressively
  • Take courageous action
  • Achieve inspiring outcomes
  • Demonstrate genuine care
  • Contribute authentically
  • Succeed collectively

Essential:

  • Tertiary qualification in WHS or minimum Cert IV in Work Health Safety
  • Rehabilitation and Return to Work Advisor qualification and experience
  • Minimum 4 years health, safety, and environment experience in Australia, with a solid knowledge of federal and state legislation related to HSE programs
  • Effective communicator at all levels across diverse groups of people
  • Collaborative, active listener with the ability to add value and work effectively within teams
  • Strong attention to detail and demonstrated analytical thinking
  • Demonstrated strong capacity to manage time and schedule with the ability to prioritise activities based on risk
  • Excellent presentation and facilitation skills for a variety of audiences
  • Working with Children Blue Card and driver's licence

Desirable:

  • Senior First Aid and Mental Health First Aid certificates
  • Experience working with schools, work experience programs, school-based traineeships and apprenticeships highly regarded
  • Experience working across multiple sites and supporting various stakeholders

We value and recognise our people through a range of benefits including superannuation matching after a qualifying period, access to corporate rate health insurance, staff discounts through PerkBox, well-being and Employee Assistance Programs to name a few.
