Douglas Shire Council are hiring exceptional individuals, who are looking for a challenge to help the Shire to Restore Paradise following the devastating impacts of Tropical Cyclone Jasper.
In an unprecedented weather event, the Douglas Shire was impacted by Tropical Cyclone Jasper in December 2023. Recovery work has been extensive and intense, and our beautiful Shire continues to shine as we welcome back visitors and restore confidence in our world-class destination.
As the Shire continues its disaster recovery efforts, several new roles have been created with Douglas Shire Council to undertake the important work of rebuilding Queensland's tropical haven, including this role Workplace Health & Safety Advisor.
The purpose of the WHS Advisor is to advise Management about Council's legislative requirements under the Work Health and Safety Act, coordinate development, implementation, auditing, reporting and monitoring of Workplace Health and Safety requirements/systems for Council and assist management and staff in relation to workers' compensation claims, rehabilitation and return to work programs. Additionally, you will facilitate the provision of staff training to meet Council's business needs and legislative requirements.
To be successful, you will be required to bring proven knowledge and experience as a WHS practitioner, the ability to communicate and interact effectively with a broad stakeholder group and be a creative problem solver and negotiator. While experience in Local Government would be ideal, experience in other industry sectors would be highly regarded, bringing the ability to adapt quickly to the pace of a different environment.
You will need to be outcomes focussed, think critically, be innovative in delivery, but also deeply anchored to systems and processes to excel in this position.
A Cert IV in Workplace Health & Safety (or ability to obtain) would be preferred, coupled with significant transferrable skills and experience. Other highly regarded attributes include the ability to communicate at all levels, lateral thinking and problem solving and above all have a great attitude and be a natural team player.
