Community Development Officer - First Peoples

Salary Range: $91,545.96 - $97,445.45 per annum
Position Type: Full-Time Permanent
Location: Council Chambers, 119 – 145 Spence Street, Cairns

We are looking for a dedicated Community Development Officer - First Peoples to join our team at Cairns Regional Council.

Primary Objectives:

  • Provide high level strategic advice to all levels of Council on trends and issues relating to First Peoples in the Cairns LGA and response options that strengthen resilience, community wellbeing and quality of life.
  • Develop strategies, advisory processes and partnerships that assist Council to build respectful, trusting, and positive relationships with First Peoples communities to facilitate Council’s reconciliation objectives.
  • Develop and implement policies and tools to assist Council to work respectfully and effectively with First Peoples across the breadth of Council business. 
  • Identify and deliver programs and initiatives that benefit First Peoples and service providers in line with key organisational positions including Council’s Corporate Plan and its reconciliation objectives.

Our Ideal Candidate: 

  • Demonstrated experience in a similar role, preferably within local government or community-based organisations.
  • Experience in developing and implementing strategic plans, particularly those related to community wellbeing and reconciliation initiatives.
  • Ability to build and maintain respectful, trusting, and positive relationships with First Peoples communities, internal stakeholders, and partner agencies.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective networks with government, non-government, First Peoples groups, and community representatives to promote partnerships and achieve outcomes.
