About the role

Our people and community are the heart of all that we do and ensuring that our staff work in a safe and supportive workplace is a high priority to us. Currently, we are seeking a talented Coordinator Waste Operations, with exceptional knowledge of Waste Operations to work as part of an evolving and dynamic team responsible for Council's waste collections services. We seek an enthusiastic, driven, and innovative person to help us turn our goals into actions.

This position is a key leadership role and will work as part of a team to lead Council's in-house Waste Operations ensuring Council's waste-related services are delivered to a high standard across the municipality. The role objectives are:

  • Providing specialist support to the Unit Manager Waste Services to ensure effective service planning and implementation including managing human and fleet resources to achieve efficiency, effectiveness, commercial viability and equity in service delivery across all areas serviced directly by Council.
  • Providing operational leadership and day-to-day coordination/management of Council’s in-house Waste Operations services, to ensure the effective delivery of daily collection services.
  • Implement service change programs associated with Kerbside Waste Reform, specifically involving fortnightly general waste collection planning.
  • Ensuring Council’s in-house Waste Operations service are managed to achieve high service standards for waste collection, including waste to landfill, recycling, Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO), and other streams as appropriate.
  • Leadership of frontline staff responsible for services including kerbside waste, and some public realm waste collection services, with a strong focus on health and wellbeing and performance and development to support them to be their best at work.

Reporting directly to the Unit Manager Waste Services, you will play a significant role in delivering a best-in-class waste services model to support Council's Kerbside Waste Reform and ongoing service delivery and cultivating a workplace that is physically and mentally safe. 

Skills and experience require to perform the role

  • Extensive experience in Waste Operations, including service design and operational management
  • Proven consultation, facilitation, liaison, and conflict-resolution skills with internal and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated commitment to a customer-first approach
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple stakeholders and effectively partner to influence decision-making
  • Solution-focused and capacity to deliver change within the business
  • In-depth knowledge of relevant transport and waste legislation, Chain of Responsibility and National Heavy Vehicle Law
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • A current Victorian Drivers Licence ideally with a Heavy Rigid Licence Endorsement
  • Experience in driving and competent operation of waste collection vehicles is desirable
