Your part in a changing world

At QBE, our purpose is to enable a more resilient future.

We’re an international insurer and reinsurer with a local presence in 27 countries.

Leveraging our deep expertise and insights, QBE offers commercial, personal and specialty products and risk management solutions to help people and businesses manage risks, build strength and embrace change to their advantage.

We’ve been cultivating resilience since 1886, when our founders started a marine insurance company in Townsville, Australia to give early pioneers a safeguard against uncertainty.

Today, we employ more than 11,600 people around the world, and our product portfolio includes property, motor, crop, energy, marine and aviation insurance.

The opportunity

QBE are in a phase of transformation and modernisation. Our Modernisation agenda places a heavy focus on uplifting of technology, including simplification and digitisation across the business, and we need an exceptional Senior Legal Counsel to ensure that privacy and information security related legal risks are identified to support us on our journey. You will have specialist expertise in legal issues arising from privacy and cybersecurity related matters and will join the Group Legal - Technology & Commercial team to provide independent, quality, commercially-focused legal advice to the QBE Group.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and driven lawyer who is as excited as we are by finding effective and innovative solutions to the challenges emerging from rapidly evolving global environment and laws and regulations relating to data protection and privacy, cybersecurity, resilience and operational risk.

Due to the constantly evolving world of technology and the laws and regulatory regimes that surround this, QBE place a strong focus on the mitigation of risk. You will partner with C-Suite executives and global Legal, Privacy and Compliance, Cyber, Risk and Operations teams to develop pragmatic global solutions that enable QBE’s strategic priorities.

As a senior lawyer within Group Legal, you will have a key role to play in managing, supervising, and training junior lawyers and paralegals across the broader team.

Your responsibilities will include:
Advising on data protection and privacy laws relevant to a global organisation, including management of risks associated with the operational use of data. This requires in-depth knowledge of Australia’s laws relevant to privacy and security of information, and awareness of the legal landscape relevant to the key regions in QBE’s global footprint.

Actively scanning the horizon for legal and regulatory developments that may impact the organisation, including developments in Australia and other relevant jurisdictions relating to privacy and data protection, security of critical infrastructure, preparing for and responding to cyber-threats, and operational resilience.

You will use your understanding of QBE’s global operations to provide sound, pragmatic, and proportionate legal advice on the impacts of such developments.

Identify strategies to manage and minimise legal issues and risks relating to security of information, cyber incidents and data breaches.

Define QBE minimum positions and maintain currency of provisions relating to privacy and security of information in QBE’s global templates. Actively engage with other global legal teams and relevant stakeholders (Cyber, Privacy, etc) to gain input and approval for positions and global templates. Provide advice and support to Legal teams on negotiation of provisions relating to privacy and security of information; lead negotiation of Standard Contractual Clauses where required.

Draft and negotiate commercial contracts and provide legal advice on matters related to commercial contracts.

Enthusiastically contributing to the Technology & Commercial Team, helping the team to find ways to innovate and improve the way we provide legal support to deliver the best outcomes for QBE

Active participation in our Global Privacy Council and contribute as a subject matter expert to the Global Practice Group for Commercial & Technology, working with lawyers across the globe to develop and implement a consistent and best practice approach to contracting across the QBE Group

Knowledge and Experience:

Experience in either a leading law firm or in-house legal team with exposure to global technology and outsourcing transactions, including global business process outsourcing, systems integration, global software licences, and cloud computing arrangements.

Experience in Insurance/Financial Services will be highly regarded
