About the opportunity
The Haematology Laboratory at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital is looking for a Senior Scientist with demonstrated experience in blood morphology to lead the Morphology Section. We are looking for someone willing to take on new challenges and provide novel solutions to everyday problems to improve quality in the laboratory and patient safety. This is a temporary full time position up to 5 July 2024 with a possibility of extension.
The Haematology Laboratory is one of the most innovative in NSW providing pathology for many complex clinical services in the Sydney Local Health District and for referrals from other public and private pathology laboratories in NSW. The laboratory has an international reputation for quality pathology and innovative research.

What you'll be doing
Responsible for the management of scientific, technical and support staff, all testing and associated activities and logistics for the assigned laboratory section. The position contributes to the quality, cost and operational integrity of the department, regulatory compliance and accreditation of laboratory services in the department, human resource, business and resource management.

- Bachelor Degree or higher degree in Science/Medical Laboratory Science or an equivalent qualification, with subjects relevant to pathology from a recognised tertiary institution.
- Demonstrated experience with paediatric and adult blood film morphology in a pathology laboratory.
- Proven leadership and management skills and experience including operational management, budget management, staff management and resource management.
- Advanced knowledge of Pathology Laboratory Information Systems including supervision of e-based Quality Management Systems.
- Extensive experience working in the laboratory including experience in staff training and competency assessment.
- Customer focused approach displaying well-developed interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with customers, patients and clinical and laboratory staff, along with report writing skills, statistical evaluation of scientific data and the ability to effectively communicate policies and procedures
- Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of accreditation frameworks, relevant standards and quality systems

Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious Diseases
This is a Category A position. All Category A applicants must read and understand NSW Health Policy Directive PD2022_030 Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Diseases. All recruits must agree to comply with the requirements outlined in this policy. All recruits must provide evidence against specified diseases and comply with the requirements of this policy at their own cost prior to appointment.
All NSW Health workers are required to have completed a primary course of a COVID-19 vaccine which has been approved or recognised by the Therapeutics Goods Administration (TGA). Additionally, Category A workers are required to receive a booster dose three months after completing the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations. New applicants must have completed the vaccination course prior to commencement with NSW Health, or provide an approved medical contraindication certificate (IM011 immunisation medical exemption form) certifying the worker cannot have any approved COVID-19 vaccines available in NSW.
Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate. Booster doses are highly recommended for all health care workers who have completed the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations.
