About the Position
Attractive opportunity for an experienced and inspiring Building Surveyor to:
- lead a great team of seven Building officers with a mix of experience
- oversee the assessment and inspection requirements of a diverse and challenging mix of development applications covering all classes (industrial, commercial, residential etc)
- work in an interesting area with a broad variety of land uses, including the McLaren Vale region and mid-coast at the southern fringe of Adelaide
- support the council to achieve quality development and growth.
Reporting to the Manager Development Services, this role will provide coordinated leadership and supervision for the Building team’s day-to-day activities, including ensuring staff availability, workload balance and performance standards. This position also entails providing professional advice to internal and external stakeholders on the development process and expert opinions in decision appeals.
About You

You will currently hold accreditation as an Accredited Professional Building Level 1 or Level 2 issued in accordance with the Planning, Development and Infrastructure Regulations 2016. You will need robust interpersonal and customer service skills to provide expert guidance and foster a professional service-oriented approach.
Key Selection Criteria:
- Leadership and management skills in a local government environment.
- Detailed knowledge of the assessments of development application process and the prescribed inspections regime.
- Thorough understanding of relevant legislation and codes including the National Construction Code and the Planning Development and Infrastructure Act 2016.
- Negotiation skills and the ability to handle difficult situations to achieve positive outcomes.
- Manage and organise work to meet conflicting demands of a diverse team.
- Detailed knowledge of council’s decision-making process and the ability to identify areas of political sensitivity.
