About the role
To enable effective cross disciplinary research, improve our capabilities and maintain and enhance critical skill sets, the Bionics Institute utilises a “Capability Pillars” model of functional expertise accessible by all projects. Capability pillars are led by Team Leaders tasked with maintain critical mass and expertise within each pillar as required.
The Animal Research Team (ART) is a key capability pillars within the Bionics Institute. This group provides husbandry, surgical and functioning testing for all the pre-clinical animal models used at the Bionics Institute and provides a variety of research support services in line with industry standard best practices. This capability pillar ensures the provision of excellent animal husbandry, outstanding technical expertise, and staff training for animal care and research personnel.
Based within the ART Capability and reporting directly to the Team Leader, this position requires a motivated incumbent to work in a multi-disciplinary research environment. Key responsibilities will include the daily husbandry of a variety of laboratory animal species in accordance with Institute policy and ethical guidelines. This role will also provide technical and administrative support related to the animal husbandry and clinical care aspects of research projects such as surgical assistance, post-operative care, data collection, ordering and record keeping.

What will you bring to the role?
- Appropriate vocational qualifications (e.g. Diploma of Animal Technology) or equivalent experience.
- Compassion, humanity and patience with a dedication to providing the highest level of animal care.
- A passion in understanding animal behaviour to enhance their wellbeing and contribute to scientific breakthroughs.
- Strong interpersonal relationship skills to work effectively with Project Leaders, Research staff and others involved in animal research.
- Sound problem solving skills and a strong attention to detail, with the ability to describe and record observations and findings clearly and accurately.
