We are seeking a Technical Officer to join our dynamic team in the lab within the field of Biomedical Sciences. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in facilitating practical classes and ensuring the smooth operation of our Cell and Molecular Teaching Laboratory. This position is ideal for individuals who have recently completed their degree or honours in science, biotechnology, or biomedical science and possess experience working in a laboratory setting or experienced research assistants seeking an ongoing part time role.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Assisting the Technical Team Leader (Biochemistry) in preparing for practical classes for the School of Biomedical Sciences and Pharmacy, particularly within the Cell & Molecular Teaching Laboratories.
- Setting up and maintaining general and specialized laboratory equipment required for teaching purposes, while also providing guidance to demonstrators and students on its usage.
- Maintaining cleanliness of equipment and glassware, and undertaking associated duties to ensure efficient laboratory functioning, including ordering consumables and minor equipment.
- Effectively communicating laboratory requirements and safety protocols to staff and students, ensuring a safe working environment.
- Assisting in compiling Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and risk assessments to ensure the safe operation of laboratories.
- Providing guidance on policies, procedures, and guidelines related to lab space, and assisting in preparations for safety inspections.
- Ensuring tasks are completed on schedule and striving for satisfactory feedback from key stakeholders.
- Adhering to University policies and procedures
This continuing part time position is a HEW 5 Higher Education Level and will be based at Callaghan Campus (Awabakal and Worimi land)

The School of Biomedical Sciences and Pharmacy has a very large and diverse teaching operation, providing teaching in anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology, microbiology, immunology and pharmacy in the College of Health Medicine and Wellbeing. The School offers Bachelor of Biomedical Science, Bachelor of Pharmacy and Bachelor of Biomedical Science honours degrees, in addition to delivering expert teaching in the Biomedical Sciences into 17 additional programs offered by the university. The School is one of the University's most research-intensive schools. Our researchers apply cutting edge technology and relevant disease models to address important questions and accelerate knowledge transfer. - Completion of a degree in biomedical science or similar field without subsequent relevant work experience; or completion of an associate diploma and at least 2 years subsequent relevant work experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
- Experience in the preparation of laboratory sessions in a tertiary teaching environment and/or management of a research laboratory. Experience in PC2 laboratories and mammalian cell culture is desirable.
- Demonstrated time management and organisational skills.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate well with staff and students, demonstrating clear communication and mutual respect.
- Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
- Computing skills that include knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
