Manager, RBS Environmental and Social Strategy (Decarbonisation & Governance)

This role sits within the CBA Retail Banking Services (RBS) Strategy function, which is accountable for defining the strategic roadmap, creating partnerships to broaden the bank's ecosystem, and driving sustainability for the Retail Bank.

The strategy team oversees the ongoing development of the RBS' strategy by advising and facilitating RBS leadership team discussions, preparing materials for the CBA Executive Leadership Team and the Board, and by collaborating on projects with leaders across the Retail Bank and the Group.

The team is responsible for driving the Environmental & Social (E&S) strategy within RBS. As the largest retail bank in the country, we have a responsibility to meet the current needs of our customers and the community while operating sustainably for future generations. We recognise the important role we play in supporting Australia's transition to a net zero economy. We help customers understand and reduce their environmental footprint and save on everyday home energy, transport and living costs through our sustainable product offerings and partnerships.

This role will be largely focused on our Decarbonisation strategy, working on innovative solutions to support customer transition to decarbonised homes and transport in line with our Net-Zero Banking Alliance commitment. This role will also support governance activities across the team.

Do work that matters:

The Manager role will report directly to the Executive Manager for RBS Environment and Social Strategy, while supporting the Senior Manager RBS Environmental and Social Strategy focused on Decarbonisation. The successful candidate will support shaping the E&S Decarbonisation Strategy for RBS; informing and driving new initiatives that reduce emissions, supporting customer engagement activities, and working with a range of stakeholders internally and externally, bringing all RBS sustainability initiatives together into a clearly communicated strategy. Strong strategic, organisational, and stakeholder management skills are required for the ideal candidate.

The role will facilitate key governance activities across the team, including tracking of RBS E&S initiatives and performance, communicating progress, and resolving or escalating blockers/challenges. The role also includes self-initiating and driving sustainability initiatives within RBS (e.g. developing products, customer engagement, digital capabilities, partnerships and enhancing internal capabilities).

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting and driving the RBS residential decarbonisation strategy to FY30, ensuring initiatives remain on track and in line with public commitments.

  • Tracking/monitoring and reporting on emissions reductions, and ensuring activities are in place to meet commitments.

  • Developing the forward-looking plan/strategy to inform the roadmap of decarbonisation initiatives for RBS.

  • Taking ownership of work streams/ projects end to end, and independently managing deliverables.

  • Working closely with other strategy, business development, product, and delivery teams across Group and RBS to ensure there is alignment to the E&S strategy & policies, keeping abreast of their strategic agenda and interdependencies.

  • Identifying roadblocks or dependencies, which could impact specific work stream / projects and resolve/ escalate to your manager as required.

  • Engaging with third party organisations and industry bodies on E&S decarbonisation strategy

  • Analysing information and presenting it clearly and concisely for stakeholders to understand and make informed decisions.

  • Contributing to formal papers for both the CBA Board and Retail Leadership Team, including regular E&S strategy progress reporting.

We're interested in hearing from people who have:

  • Strategy experience, consulting experience, or experience in Retail Banking/Financial Services firm, with a strong skillset in product/innovation strategy.

  • Excellent strategic thinking skills, including a structured approach to problem solving that can be well articulated.

  • A can-do attitude and flexibility to handle multiple competing tasks/priorities.

  • An ability to project manage and work independently while managing a variety of stakeholders, both upwards and downward.

  • The ability to influence stakeholders and independently resolve roadblocks to reach a common goal.

  • An excellent customer focus with a strong interest in Environmental and Social matters.

  • Experience or expertise in emissions reporting, sustainability or climate science is a bonus, but not strictly required.

  • Strong governance and/or organisational skills are highly desired.
