The Australian Medical Association (AMA) is the peak professional body for registered medical practitioners and students. The association plays a pivotal role in representing the interests of the medical profession and patients to governments, senior health leaders and the community, at national and State levels.
In South Australia, AMA(SA) is experiencing an exciting growth phase and we’re looking for a dynamic Media and Communications Advisor to join our expanding communications team. The team provides important support to the AMA(SA) President and other representatives in leading the work to advocate for doctors in our State, while influencing critical policy and program decisions in the health sector.
The Opportunity:
We’re encouraging applicants with experience in content creation, media relations and/or communications within the health, public sector or membership association sector to apply for a role being offered at 0.8 – 1.0 FTE. Experience in the political sphere would also be beneficial.

In this role, you’ll work alongside our Senior Policy, Media and Communications Advisor to:
- Create engaging content, including press releases, articles, op-eds and social media posts to deliver value for our members and amplify AMA(SA)’s presence across relevant platforms.
- Assist with securing media coverage opportunities for AMA(SA) initiatives and advocacy through building and maintaining strong relationships with key media representatives.
- Contribute to the evolution, content and production of the AMA(SA) magazine, medicSA, to deliver benefits for our existing and prospective members and advertisers.
- Manage AMA(SA)’s social media presence, generating consistent and value-adding content and engaging regularly with our audience.
- Assist with the preparation of internal and external communications to translate medical and health information into messaging that explains complex health issues and promotes key initiatives.
What will you bring?
- Proven experience in communications, media and content creation, ideally within a health or membership association industry environment.
- A strong ability to create clear, compelling and engaging content for specific audiences.
- A demonstrable capacity to produce communications messaging and content under pressure and to short deadlines.
- Well-developed skills in engaging the media and pitching and briefing spokespeople.
- Innovative, creative and strategic thinking to develop and deliver effective marketing, media and communications plans.
- Demonstrated experience in social media management and content creation across all mediums, including video editing and production.
- Strong stakeholder engagement capability, with a ‘members first’ approach.
- Advanced IT skills, including website updates.
Key Responsibilities:
- Writing magazine and online articles, media releases, corporate and editorial writing.
- Working with the President to respond to media enquiries.
- Pitching stories and providing statements and information as required.
- Develop comprehensive media and communications plans to support the organisation in the implementation and rollout of its projects, campaigns and core initiatives.
- Be prepared to quickly respond to emerging issues by keeping up to date with new and ongoing health and other topics affecting AMA(SA), its members and the community.
Skills & Qualifications:
- 3 + years’ experience in communications, PR or media
- Demonstrated expertise in proactively creating media opportunities and events
- Exceptionally strong verbal and written communication skills
- Proven capacity to work effectively under pressure and to deadline
- You must possess the right to work in Australia in order to apply for the role
- A current driver's licence
- Successful National Police Check, made available before any offer of employment.
- Ability to work out of normal work hours when required.
