About Us :

Katherine Town Council is the Municipal Council for Katherine, NT. Providing services to the Katherine Community relating to rates, roads, infrastructure, animal control, waste management and other core essential services. Katherine is the fourth largest town in the Northern Territory, situation 320km south of Darwin.

About You :

Position Summary :

This position is responsible for providing accurate, timely, responsive and cost-effective payroll services to Council. The position interprets employee conditions including Enterprise Agreement, relevant award, legislation and contracts to ensure ongoing compliance and the highest confidentiality, whilst effectively communicating with staff and providing effective customer service.

Key Requirements :

  • Previous experience in a similar role.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret, apply and explain relevant policy and legislation to a range of staff.
  • High attention to detail with the ability to audit and check accuracy of own work.
  • Ability to train and mentor staff in payroll of similar process.
  • Ability to produce regular and ad hoc reports with the ability to investigate data sets and identify and report on outliers and anomalies.
  • Understanding of different responsibilities within an organisation and the ability to influence others to complete their responsibilities within timeframes.
  • Demonstrated strong time management skills and the ability to meet deadlines and changing priorities.
  • Able to provide problem-solving advice and guidance within boundaries of policy.
  • Current NT Drivers Licence;

Job Responsibility :

  1. Provide accurate and timely interpretation of employee conditions including relevant Enterprise Agreement, Award, legislation and contracts to ensure compliance and the provision of an accurate payroll service.
  2. Process end to end fortnightly and ad hoc payroll including adjustments, leave, salary packaging, reporting and payroll filing.
  3. Calculate, check and administer leave reports and leave provisions.
  4. Prepare monthly superannuation payments to a Super Clearing House and Super Funds.
  5. Provide timely and accurate information to employees regarding pay details as required.
  6. Facilitate training for new and existing staff and management on payroll requirements.
  7. Ensure payroll records are accurate though regular audit.
  8. Maintenance of employee master file data, ensuring confidentiality of payroll records at all times.
  9. Administer Workcover payments, child support payments, elected member allowances and other payments as required.
  10. Assist with other areas of the finance department as required including accounts payable and accounts receivable.
  11. Other duties as directed by the Finance Manager at level.

Organisational Responsibilities

  1. Ensure compliance with Workplace Health and Safety requirements. Comply with workplace procedures for risk identification, risk assessment and risk control. Participate in activities associated with the management of workplace health and safety. Identify and report health and safety risks, accidents, incidents, injuries, property damage and mishaps at the workplace.
  2. Assist in the implementation of the Katherine Town Council’s Local Counter Disaster Sub-Plan in the event of a disaster;
  3. Ensure incumbent is dedicated to servicing our community and will listen to and proactively respond to their needs;
  4. Foster sustainable, honest relationships with the community and stakeholders
  5. Perform and deliver results that align with organisations strategic direction and serve our community;
  6. Work in accordance with Council’s Vision and Mission statement.
  7. Provide excellent customer service through incoming telephone calls, email and front counter enquiries
