The Australian Marine Oil Spill Centre (AMOSC) is a not-for-profit subsidiary company of the Australian Institute of Petroleum (AIP) and has a membership base consisting of high-profile energy companies in Australia.
AMOSC's primary purpose is as an emergency response organisation, providing resources to industry and government as a result of an incident in Australia's marine environment. AMOSC owns and operates the industry's major spill response facilities including stockpiles of spill response equipment and sub-surface intervention equipment. AMOSC's permanent staff of 16 are available 24/7, and the centre relies on a core group of industry experts of 80+. AMOSC has multiple facilities located in Geelong, Fremantle, Exmouth and Broome.
AMOSC in addition, provides training, advice, auditing, contingency planning and exercise management services to the industry, as well as representing the industry across a range of relevant forums and working groups. AMOSC drives and deploys good response practises across national and international organisations.

We are seeking an enthusiastic person to join our highly engaged team as a Technical Officer, Capability Building (incl Oiled Wildlife Response).
The role will support the delivery of AMOSC’s Capability Building and response services including the provision of technical advice, training, exercising and spill response support.
The role may be either Fremantle or Geelong based, with regular travel required across key locations including AMOSC’s training facilities (Geelong, VIC and Fremantle, WA); and onsite at AMOSC member company offices (Australia wide). Responses may be Australia wide.
Key Responsibilities
- Under the direction of AMOSC’s General Manager, Capability Building & Projects assist with AMOSC’s Preparedness Services activities (incl technical advice, training, exercises, and workshops).
- Coordinate AMOSC’s capability and engagement with Industry and Government personnel on oiled wildlife preparedness and response, with support from AMOSC’s Manager, Spill Response Science.
- Support AMOSC Member companies with technical advice for marine spill response, including capability reviews, Oil Pollution Emergency Plan (OPEP) and Contingency Plan development/review and the development of Tactical Response Plans (TRPs).
- Provide a central point of contact and leading example for all industry and government personnel on technical aspects of preparing for and responding to a marine spill incident.
- Be response ready and available at short notice, to support an industry-based incident, providing technical support in a Incident Command Centre (ICC) or field-based role.
To be successful in the role you will have:
Required:
- General knowledge of emergency management and marine pollution response.
- Interest and/or experience in the protection of wildlife (especially marine fauna) from hazards.
- Interest and/or experience in facilitating adult-learning with strong communication, problem-solving and conflict resolutions skills.
- Proficiency in reviewing written information and writing clear, concise, and accurate reports.
- Proficiency in computer applications – word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software.
- Ability to establish priorities and coordinate multiple activities to meet deliverable timeframes, and
- Strong interpersonal skills including motivation, responsibility, flexibility, and teamwork.
Preferred:
- 2-5+ years of Industry (Oil & Gas or relevant) experience,
- Previous experience responding to marine spill incident(s), or expereince in other emergency management roles,
- Qualification in a relevant discipline (Environmental/Marine Science, Emergency/Crisis Management)
Recognised:
- Work experience in a relevant discipline, transferrable skills/qualifications.
