Job description

Roses in the Ocean is a national not for profit organisation founded on and operating through the lens of lived experience of suicide; we exist to save lives and reduce emotional pain. We seek to lead the significant cultural shift needed to save lives through harnessing the perspectives of all we represent, along with our own lived experience of suicide. With our actions driven and guided by those with a lived experience of suicide, we innovate and transform suicide prevention, and drive and deliver system reform. We support organisations and government to effectively and meaningfully integrate lived experience expertise into suicide prevention.

Everyone who works within Roses in the Ocean has a lived experience of suicide which is defined as ‘having experienced suicidal thoughts, survived a suicide attempt, cared for someone through suicidal crisis, or been bereaved by suicide.’

The opportunity

Reporting to the CEO, the Head of Community Partnerships will be responsible for developing and fostering stakeholder relationships and partnerships with organisations who represent the diverse communities, priority population groups, and also those working to address social determinants that have a distinct intersectional relationship with suicide. 

Additionally, this position will develop Roses in the Ocean's capacity to respond in culturally relevant ways to the needs of priority groups in suicide prevention, supporting the organisation to ensure all of our work is accessible to all members of Community and enhanced through the development of long-term multi-layered partnerships with relevant organisations.  This role and its program of work will provide a valuable resource for the organisation. 

Position responsibilities include:

  • With the CEO, the Cultural Responsiveness Committee and external experts, collaboratively design and implement a Cultural Responsiveness Program for Roses in the Ocean that actively engages staff to apply the Program’s learning to their work including our facilitators and other contractors
  • Initiate and develop relationships with organisations that represent communities disproportionately affected by suicide (such as men, LGBTIQA+ communities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, veterans, culturally and linguistically diverse communities, rural populations, and other groups) and identify points of potential collaboration
  • Engage people with lived experience of suicide from communities disproportionately affected by suicide to support improved cultural awareness and responsiveness from Roses in the Ocean’s services and other activities
  • Establish links between Roses in the Ocean and organisations working in key social services and social policy areas that intersect with suicide and suicide prevention (such as alcohol and other drugs, domestic and family violence, sexual violence and other areas)
  • Create and maintain a database of contacts from and resources developed by representative organisations and relevant services for access and use across the organisation
  • Work with Roses in the Ocean’s teams to ensure learnings are shared and utilised across all services offered by Roses in the Ocean ensuring products and services are widely accessible 
  • Lead projects related to priority populations in suicide prevention through co-design, consultation and other approaches, with support from the Project and Workshops team and appropriate external partners.
  • Contribute meaningfully and collaboratively as a member of the Roses in the Ocean Management Team
  • Other relevant duties as advised by the CEO

About You

To succeed in this role, you’ll bring:

  • A lived experience of suicide and an understanding of the impact it has on families, workplaces, friends, and communities.
  • Previous experience working with one or more priority populations, preferably within suicide prevention such as men, LGBTIQA+ communities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, veterans, culturally and linguistically diverse communities, rural populations or other groups disproportionately affected by suicide.
  • Previous experience in stakeholder engagement, partnerships establishment and development.
  • Experience in managing competing priorities, complex tasks and coordinating activities across numerous business functions and team members.
  • High-level written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate and liaise effectively and sensitively at all levels, both internally and externally.
  • Demonstrated capacity to maintain confidentiality and professional standards of behaviour in difficult and sensitive circumstances. 
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong relationships with colleagues and stakeholders at all levels.
  • Demonstrated time-management, logistics and problem-solving skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Office 365. Experience with Monday.com and SharePoint desirable.
