Job description

Symons Clark Logistics is a 140 year old, family owned, Port Adelaide based transport and logistics company. Our experience brings with it premium wharf cartage and container transport services, with a focus on providing customers with complete logistics solutions including warehousing, container pack/unpack, distribution, over-dimensional, heavy haulage, project logistics and Australia wide bulk haulage.

The Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Manager is directly responsible for the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) management, required to meet statutory and organisational objectives. The position provides workplace HSE leadership as well as strategy direction and advice to internal and external stakeholders.

What you will be doing…

  • Providing strong leadership, guidance, and direction to the Health, Safety and Environment Team.
  • Effectively communicating and implementing organisational change initiatives to deliver against Symons Clark Logistics Strategic Plan.
  • Leading initiatives and collaborating with other teams to ensure alignment and consistency of HSE practices and standards.
  • Proactively leading a high standard of Health, Safety and Environment, and be accountable for leading a culture where the safety, health and wellbeing of our staff is valued.
  • Working in partnership with managers and Health and Safety Representatives to ensure a safe working environment and safe systems of work, acting as a role model and ambassador, by demonstrating safe work behaviours.
  • Developing and driving practical policies and procedures in line with legislation and operational requirements.
  • Developing and overseeing the Safety Management System (SMS), facilitating safe work practices, including orientation, training, incident, and hazard management.
  • Leading investigations and providing support and recommendation for all workplace injuries and incidents.
  • Conducting regular risk audits and inspections, implementing control measures to mitigate identified risks, analysing trends in Health, Safety and Environment performance and working with managers and key stakeholders to address corrective actions.
  • Leading and advising the WHS Committee and the management team in meeting their duties and obligations under the Work Health and Safety Act and the Work Health and Safety Regulation.
  • Consulting with business, developing, and reviewing company policies, standards, and procedures, ensuring relevant road and heavy vehicle legislation, including practical and effective Chain of Responsibility (COR) initiatives are being adhered to.
  • Liaise with Regulatory Authorities on behalf of Symons Clark Logistics.
  • Actively lead and promote a culture of continuous improvement.

Do you have…

  • Previous experience working in a Health, Safety and Environment Manager and/ or Work, Health and Safety Manager role in the Transport industry, or equivalent experience.
  • Relevant qualifications in WHS; with a minimum Cert IV in WHS.
  • Strong working knowledge of WHS legislation and regulations.
  • Consultative approach to safety; excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven leadership and management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and professionally across departments.
  • Excellent organisational skills, flexibility, and ability to set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Working knowledge of compliance software, and tools.
  • Advanced troubleshooting and multi-tasking skills.
