Job description

HEO8 $106,561 - $119,550 per annum plus an employer contribution of 17% superannuation.

Full time, fixed term position until 31 January 2025.

Wirltu Yarlu is responsible for engaging with and recruiting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as well as providing support to students during their time at the University of Adelaide. They provide culturally appropriate support and academic mentoring to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and support them to access tertiary education through various pathway programs, including Marni Wingku, the Karnkanthi Indigenous Education Program and the Access Pathway. Wirltu Yarlu also supports the broader University to better understand Indigenous cultures and histories through the delivery of the Indigenous Knowledges Major and employment of Cultural Advisors. 

Reporting to the Pro-Vice Chancellor Indigenous Engagement, in this role you will work under broad direction with a degree of autonomy, to focus on developing high-level policy/program initiatives including the university’s Cultural Capability Framework, the Indigenisation of Curricula project, the Indigenous Senior Executive professional development program, and other matters as directed. In this highly rewarding role, you will work closely with divisions, faculties, departments and units, relevant committees and working groups, as well as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and staff across the University to ensure that appropriate consultation and co-design imperatives are applied.

To be successful you will need: 

  • Sound knowledge and experience in designing and implementing Indigenous-focused strategies, and knowledge of the factors impacting on Indigenous higher education participation in South Australia.
  • High level of written and oral communication skills, with experience in creating and presenting high-quality publications and documents.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills, confident presentation, approachability, and the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to work co-operatively in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated understanding and awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures, and issues, and demonstrated ability to engage key Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote the organisational values of integrity, respect, collegiality, excellence and discovery, and a commitment to positively comply with the associated behaviour expectations.
  • A valid Working With Children Check or the willingness to obtain one.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Australian higher education sector - highly desirable

Qualification/s:

  • Postgraduate qualifications or progress towards postgraduate qualifications and extensive relevant experience; or
  • An equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
