Job description

The Australian Orthopaedic Association is seeking an experienced Management Accountant to join their Finance Team.

The Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA) is the peak professional organisation for orthopaedic surgery in Australia. AOA is a not-for-profit organisation that:

  • provides high-quality specialist education, training and continuing professional development for Australian orthopaedic surgeons
  • is committed to ensuring the highest possible standard of orthopaedic care
  • is the leading authority in the provision of orthopaedic information to the community
  • actively supports scientific research and orthopaedic humanitarian initiatives in Australia and overseas
  • operates the Australian Orthopaedic Association National Joint Replacement Registry (AOANJRR), which has a core function of monitoring outcomes of all arthroplasty procedures and participating in research projects.

AOA has more than 2,000 members – consisting of most orthopaedic consultants and trainees (registrars) in Australian hospitals and spanning all orthopaedic subspecialties.

The position is based in the Sydney CBD.

The opportunity

Working as part of a team, the Management Accountant will play a crucial role in delivering high quality support to AOA’s team members and stakeholders.  
Working under the direction of the Financial Controller, the Management Accountant will ensure effective support for the financial functions of AOA departments through prompt and timely delivery of exceptional reporting.

This role involves:

  • Conducting analysis of all costs for AOA and its associated entities such as state branches and subspecialty societies
  • Producing the annual budgets and forecasts for all portfolios 
  • Managing the budgets around all costing centres and providing variance analysis
  • Developing and maintaining accurate costing systems in relation to labour and production methods
  • Playing an active role in costing new research trials for the AOANJRR
  • Ensuring all costs are identified and recorded accurately
  • Analysing the P&L and balance sheet accounts to understand the main cost drivers of the business
  • Partnering with the AOA Finance Team, managers and AOA entities to determine and implement process improvements
  • Providing financial support to AOA through monthly preparation of financial documents, correspondence, costing of projects and ad-hoc reports
  • Acting as a point of contact for the AOA research trials, ensuring timely costing and quoting for key stakeholders 
  • Liaising with the auditors to ensure accurate financial reporting of research grants are achieved

To be successful in this role, applicants will have:

  • Previous cost-accounting experience
  • Relevant accounting/business and/or a finance degree
  • Currently be studying for or have completed CPA or CA qualifications

Additionally, the appointee will have the following knowledge and skills:

  • Excellent planning and organisational skills
  • A high level of attention to detail with the ability to prioritise
  • Ability to effectively communicate with non-finance staff
  • Well-developed written communication skills, including the ability to write reports, minutes and correspondence
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to liaise and communicate effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders, individuals, and groups
  • The ability to work independently without close supervision
  • Initiative, intrinsic motivation and honesty
  • Willingness to work collaboratively, and to contribute ideas 
  • Excellent working knowledge of computer software including Excel and other production/costing software and ERP systems
